General Notes | Want to adopt this dog? Please do not email us. Please fill out the Adoption Application ASAP. We've been fostering Benson for 3 weeks - he has had NO accidents in the house, is completely house trained, he uses the dog door throughout the day, often taking himself outside to just lounge on the porch or roll in the grass. We haven't crated him at night, he just sleeps on the foot of the bed in my kid's rooms, alternating rooms each night. He is trustworthy in the house, and naps often. He gets excited for walks, is easy to leash and willingly takes walks. Benson is easy in the car, currently involved in daily school drop offs. He has adorable little sounds he makes to communicate with the humans, he's especially vocal when we return home and he greets us. :) Benson is easily motivated by treats, and he loves peanut butter in a toy. He is calm at meal time, often laying down to slowly eat his food. And Benson is the best grasshopper hunter - very successful! Benson is small - 30-35 pounds at 9 months old. He's the perfect little compact size!! He's easy to have in the house or in the car. Health Notes | Neutered, in good health Other Dogs | Benson is friendly and playful with our large lab (6 year old male lab) but is also independent when he wants to nap or go outside by himself. He wrestles with our lab and also explores the yard on his own. He is also fine at the fence with our backyard neighbor dogs (adult labradoodle and large breed puppy mix). However, on walks he is nervous with approaching dogs and barks, this should be improved with confidence, age, reassurance, and exposure. He was also defensive and aggressive toward small breed dog in our yard. He would do well with a confident, tolerant dog in his family but would also do well as an only dog. Cats | not sure Children | Yes! Loves our 11-year old and 14-year old, prefers them to the adults in the house (will hang out with the kids in their rooms instead of staying with the adults), but I'm sure he would love to be the center of attention with just adults in the house too, he is loyal and loving toward his people. Benson loves snuggles with all of us, asks to sit in laps, and immediately showed us he prefers to quietly sleep on beds at night. Training | Is trustworthy in the house with the exception of occasionally taking a sock or random item, although he willingly and immediately turns over an items when asked and is easily redirected with a dog toy of any variety. Benson knows "sit" and is quickly learning "down" and is working on "stay" and "shake." He's very smart and learns quickly. He figured out the dog door with just 2 or 3 tries and is understanding many words. He does willingly go in the crate with a treat when needed, and hasn't been loud/upset to be in the crate. Leash | Easy to get the leash on him and go on walks. Benson is very distracted by rabbits and birds and he is often darting back and forth on the leash, but he is NOT frightened by loud sounds of all kinds or passing cars. He needs work and confidence when approaching othe dogs on leash to stay calm and stay on task. His challenges with walking will improve with experience and training. Activity Level | Benson has energy for some morning and afternoon wrestling with our lab, and he loves a midday walk and a bedtime walk, but he naps almost the entire remainder of the day. He's sleeping at night from 8 pm to 5 or 6 am. Personality | Calm and curious. Wants snuggles and reassurance but also sneaks off for quiet naps on his own. Story | Not known other than he boarded transport from Texas to Colorado, arrived in Colorado on August 6th. His paperwork shows he was in a shelter in Conroe, TX. Thank you! | Adoption Donations | Our adoption donations are $350 for dogs 8 weeks to 1 year, $300 for 1-6 years, $250 for dogs 7-10 years, and $100 for 11+ years of age. Purebred dogs regardless of age are $400. These minimum donations help to defer the costs of initial vet care, food, and supplies while in foster care that currently average over $500 per dog). Meeting Dogs | Foster dogs may have meet & greets by appointment to approved applicants only. To become an approved applicant - please complete the application process. Please know | Available dogs are updated as soon as possible and we do our best to keep it up-to-date, but occasionally dogs shown may become unavailable without notice due to a pending adoption. We encourage you to put in an application even if you don't see your new family member currently, as once you are approved, we can place you on the waiting list for first priority on the selection of the dogs we do bring in. That means you can often meet a dog upon transport arrival and adopt before they even make it to this page! We can not guarantee that a dog you wish to adopt is available by the time your adoption application is submitted, processed, and approved. Your application is good for 90 days from the time of approval for any dog as long as it is a good fit for your family and your lifestyle.
