Alfie is a good boy ! Alfie is being returned to MHLM from the only family he has known, and we are really not sure why as the family said Alfie is such a good boy who is great with their toddler. Perhaps they bit off more than they can chew with a new baby and another dog & cat...Unfortunately it is Alfie who ends up on the short end of the stick leaving a family he loves... We are committed to Alfie as we are to all of our MHLM pups, so if he is not the right dog for this family... We will find Alfie his most perfect family who will love him and see his puppy energy as a positive! Alfie is wonderful and gentle with the family toddler who loved Alfie. Smart and food motivated, Alfie picks up new skills easily & is a high energy confident pup Although he has never hurt the family cat, the family does not like how Alfie looks at the cat and sometimes paws & chases him Alfie’s Foster Mom here. I got him on Saturday 3/19/22, This update is from 4/10/22: General info I’m told the original adopters did a dna test and he came back as a “super mutt”. The guy told me Alfie was very good with their toddler, but they returned him after ten months. I think they just wanted a pure bred lab. I don't really get it. He's such a sweetie. Totally calm in the car. Makes my dog look like a jerk. He IS Housebroken, but does not know how to ASK to be let out. He figured out the doggy door quickly and actually took himself out to poop in the middle of the night the first night I had him – Bravo! He gets it! TRAINABLE. That being said, one day I removed the dog door because it was so windy outside. Alfie did not know how to ask to go out and had a pee accident in the house. I think he can learn quickly, especially if there is another dog in the house for his to queue off. I just leave the dog door in at our house. Alfie and my dog go out to the patio to hang in the sun together, so sweet. When he first came to me, he went upstairs to explore and when he didn’t come down it became apparent that he had never seen stairs before! I spent 30 minutes sitting and coaxing with treats. Then he was a pro, no problem at all. TRAINABLE! Crate – I can coax him in with treats but he doesn’t just go in on command. Once he’s in, he’s fine. I always crate either him or my dog when I leave the house for more than 15 mintues, as my own dog likes to play a little rough. Walking on leash – pretty good when it’s just the 2 of us UNTIL he sees a squirrel or rabbit. Then he pulls and sings like a husky. Needs training on this. UPDATE: using a Gentle Leader makes a WORLD of difference. He is still interested in squirrels and rabbits and would benefit from more training but he is doing well and not singing / squealing like before. He may also be getting used to the fact that there are SO MANY squirrels in our neighborhood. He doesn't pull like a wild child and will sometimes make a noise but I tell he "We Are Walking" and lead him and that ususally works, even when I have both dogs on leash. Has made great progress witht the gentle leader. If I use a martingale collar or harness, he is much more likely to pull. Personality Alfie is calm, sweet, a good mix of independent and affectionate. He likes being loved on, but is not needy. He will come check in and lean on me, but not for too long. In the evening he likes to sneak up on the sofa behind me and snuggle / snooze. He likes to be in the same room with me and will hang out in the kitchen when I cook, but doesn't beg. He comes in and curls up near the fridge while my dog hogs the dog bed. I allow him on my bed and sometimes he will join, sometimes he chooses the crate (door open) and sometimes he sleeps downstairs by himself. Playful, not aggressive with dogs. LOVES the dog park!!! LOVES daycare!! LOVES to run fast! I was told his previous Papa took him on leash running and hiking. I don't trust him off leash but believe he could progress to that with a good trainer. Quiet in the house but also happy to play assertively with my 2 year old dog. Vocal when excited. Sings like a Husky at times, I notice there is less singing as he settles in to our routine and knows what's happening, what the noises in our house are. My dog likes to play more aggressively than Aflie does and Alfie will handle it but if he has had enough he will come to me (I work from home) and I put my dog in a kennel to settle and give Alfie a break. Sometimes they are playing together and making a bunch of growling and singing noises and I go check on them and see they are not even touching each other - just talking smack! So funny! Loves his antlers and chew bones. So sweet. I will hear him digging thru the toy bin, looking for the right toy with the right mouth feel, and he will choose a spot to self entertain with a good chew session. I find this incredibly adorable. What he is good at Adorable! Smart Sweet personality, gentle with people and kids (unless my dog has him all amped up - then he might jump to say hello!) 99.9% Housebroken Great in car Great in crate Trainable Food motivated Snuggle-able He is SO much better than my own pup at some things! Doesn’t jump on people, doesn’t mouth on people. And he looks super handsome with his new red collar, harness and leash! What he needs work on The usual one year old puppy stuff! Wants to see out the windows at home, will jump on furniture to get a better view at times, especially if there are people or squirrels or rabbits outside. Needs more work on walking on leash, ignoring distractions. But I am actually amazed at his progress!
