Bradley as an absolute fun 7 month old Gsd, Lab mix pup!  He makes us laugh with his puppy clumsiness! He has been very easy to train!  He knows sit, come, stay, and we are working on leave it!  He loves his walks and does well on the leash!  His ears still don’t know if they are going to stand or flop!  Needless to say they are pretty cute just the way they are!  He is crate trained and sleeps quietly in his crate all night! He would love a family to call his own!  He does great with kids, dogs, and cats!  One of his most favorite places is the water!  He loves the wading pool or the big pool in his fosters backyard!  He would do great on hikes!  Or on the beaches!  He would love to have someone to play toys with him, but will play by himself.   He loves his nightly couch time and will cuddle right up in your lap.    Please research this breed before submitting an application or inquiry. Lisa is a 4 year old Dutch Shepherd a great guard dog, she takes a while to warm up but over all a sweet girl. She is very active and vocal and is obsessed with tennis balls, she loves to play catch. she will need an active owner or an active family to take her on walks. Lisa does good with children,  a little apprehensive with smaller dogs she will likely thrive as an only dog.     Please note: We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is on our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. Adoption fees: $450 for dogs 0 to 2 yrs, $400 for dogs 2 yrs, $350 for dogs 3 to 5 yrs, and $300 for 6 yrs and older. Please follow Calpaws K9 rescue on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CalpawsK9Rescue) for updates on our dogs. Update: Lisa is up to date on her shots and she is ready for her forever home. She is getting better everyday with her listening skills. She adores her humans once she trusts them. Lisa is strong willed but frequent training sessions are helping her slow down, master basic commands and relax. Lisa does well with kids, she met a toddler recently and was so gentle with him. She takes a little longer to warm up to men than to women, but does ok once she starts to trust the person. Lisa loves playing fetch in the water too!    She will benefit from an experienced adopter who will continue to work with her and focus her energy with walks and training. Lisa loves the crate and it is her relaxing spot. She also travels without issues - she has ventured into the Yosemite mountains multiple times with her foster family. Lisa is the sweetest Dutch Shepherd you ever met. Slow to warm up but an absolute sweetheart. She knows her basic commands, easy to walk, crate trained and loves to snuggle, as long as her toys are not in sight ;) Lisa is obsessed about the ball. She will play fetch all day long, but will also rest quietly if you tell her that playtime is done (provided you hide the ball). At her foster home, she has blossomed into a comfortable, sweet and relaxed doggie! She goes for a walk in the morning and stay in the crate most of the day with little breaks. She has another walk in the evening, ball playtime, training, brushing and lots of snuggles. She sleeps all night without a problem. Lisa is wicked smart - she can sniff a ball out from a mile away and will do really well with some agility training.    A perfect family for Lisa is one that can keep her on a schedule, take her for 2 short walks a day, and keep Lisa stimulated with training. She will do well with a family that understands how to set boundaries, yet give her the snuggles she needs. Lisa does well with other dogs (she does not really care for anything beyond her toys and her people :)) but she will also thrive as an only dog. If you are looking for a companion that can hang by your side wherever you go, this is the perfect dog for you!  More pictures might be available on https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs at a later time. River came to us this past February. We got his sister, Willow, as well. We were told they were a bonded pair that ended up at the Stockton Shelter after their owner died. We were urged to keep them together, but siblings should not remain together and River and Willow were no exception. We separated the pair. Please note: We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is on our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. We are not a shelter and do not have a facility. All our dogs are in foster homes. Adoption fees: $450 for dogs 12 months/younger, $400 for dogs 1-2 Yrs, $350 for dogs 3-5yrs, and $300 for 6yrs and older Please follow Calpaws K9 rescue on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CalpawsK9Rescue) for updates on our dogs. Update: We spent the day with River yesterday at the training facility and he will soon be officially ready to go home from his board and train. For those of you who may have missed River in the past, we pulled River from the Stockton shelter along with his sister, Willow. This bonded pair ended up at the shelter after their owner has passed away. We believed them to be about a year old. Willow was adopted quickly, but River was a different story. River was wound tight, he would avoid contact and he was incredibly shut down. He would flee and because he is incredibly agile this boy was able to get away easily. He could clear a fence and get out of a crate. So we did what we do and got him help as well as the tools he needed in order for him to be an adoptable dog. We sent him to a board and train for 8 weeks. In his time at RFRD academy this boy has learned so much, in fact he is a better trained boy than most of our dogs. He has learned to trust and now knows he has a job. Having the purpose gives him stricture and consistency that allows him to feel safe. The upside is he warms up quickly and is more relaxed and loving than he was before he went to his training. To whom ever adopts him, they will get 10 free sessions to continue to learn the work needed for River. So in other words you will be getting free training, skills.....we can all use better skills in becoming a better dog owner. River will be going to a foster home where his skills will be continued to be applied. River would be suited in an active home. River is good about walks and would be great with a person who likes to climb and generally likes to be active. River does like his pets especially from those he trusts. Which means with working his skills, he will be lovable and thrive. River will be ready to be officially adopted in a few more weeks. This makes us so happy because several months ago he was a completely different dog and not adoptable. If you would like to find out more about River, meet him or be a part of his next journey, please send an email to cpk9rescue@gmail.com or go online to CalPaws.org ---------- River came to us this past February. We got his sister, Willow, as well. We were told they were a bonded pair that ended up at the Stockton Shelter after their owner died. We were urged to keep them together, but siblings should not remain together and River and Willow were no exception. We separated the pair. Willow was adopted fairly quickly by a wonderful family. River.....well River was going to need a game plan. River was in several homes, he was destructive, hard to connect with, he was a challenge. Abuse had taken its toll on this boy. We knew he was going to have some issues, we knew he would be a hard dog to place. We reached out to RFRD Academy and sought help on getting this boy some skills, some support and a game plan. For the past few months River has been learning to be a dog. Learning to be in a crate, get used to a slip lead, but more importantly he has been learning to trust. We got a video of River from last week. This is not the same dog we left at the facility several weeks ago, this is a much more confident and engaging dog. I can not tell you how much this video excites me. River will be able to be an amazing dog. He is ready for this forever home. His training was not inexpensive, in fact we hand picked a training that would be suitable for his needs, his issues and quirks. We wanted him to have the tools to be the best dog possible. After this intensive training we feel he is ready. The best part is....whomever gets River will continue on with training. RFRD Academy will train the new owner on all his skills. We have ten free sessions for River and his new family. This way he has support from us, the training and his new family. A win, win situation. So a recap on River for an amazing family looking for a lovely dog. We believe River is a little over a year. He is fully vetted, housed trained. Good with other dogs. He responds well to his name, he is crate trained and comes with his own trainer. Please research this breed before submitting an application or inquiry. Brody is a sweet fun boy who lives to play. He is about 2 years old and loves to hang out with people and entertain them by playing with his toys. He loves walks and napping in the sun. He is a very polite fetch player and makes sure everyone gets a turn to play. He sleeps quietly in his crate and is eager to please and easy to train. He knows all his basic commands. This is Nala. She is just over one year old. We got her when she was roughly 10 weeks old. She is a big sweetheart and loves to be loved on. She also likes to do her own thing too, and thinks she’s smaller than she is sometimes when she goes for naps and tries to hide behind the curtains or under the couch but really only her snout is covered. She’s mainly been indoors so she might bark at anything and anyone a few times just because she’s not used to seeing very many people or things. We love her! She deserves lots of attention and time being spent with her best human friend. She is a smart girl, fixed, has all her shots, house broke, crate trained, arguably speaks English. She’s been around a baby and she grew up with our male lab mix so she’s best around another male dog just as sweet as her. She is over her weight so it’s best she is with someone who is active and can get her to be her best happiest balance. Nala is a great dog who needs a great human to care for her and give her the same love she has to give. More pictures might be available on https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs at a later time. Sammy has been with us since August of last year. Yes, he is still available for adoption and he is in the most amazing foster home. After posting about Nolan, our new tripod, we thought we would go ahead and post Sammy, who was actually our first tripod. Sammy has been with us since August of last year. Yes, he is still available for adoption and he is in the most amazing foster home. Mary, Matt and human Sam have become our heroes as well as Sammy’s. To know Sammy! We realized he must have been much younger than we first thought because this boy has grown so much over the past few months. He is naughty, cranky, protective, but this boy loves with all his being. Sammy does not know he is physically handicapped. He is agile, strong, fast and a delight to watch as he navigates on three legs. Sammy is handicapped in his brain, the damage from severe abuse and the reason for the amputation of his rear leg. Sammy has spent the past few months learning to trust. Yesterday, Sammy went to the vet, he had opened his pad on one of his feet and he had a large cut. For his foster mom, Mary, taking Sammy to the vet was a new encounter and can created additional stress. But Mary is wonderful. Yesterday went surprising well. Another test and obstacle Sammy has had to overcome and passed with flying colors. The vet office was supplied with Sammy’s medical history and even they were surprised at how well Sammy did...Mary boasted and smiled like a proud parent beaming over their child. Sammy is doing so well, but still has challenges. Sammy is still looking for that perfect home. A family that likes to be active, with walks, but understand that Sammy is super slow to meet new people and new situations. Sammy loves with all his heart. He initially had an issue with men, but now, Matt holds the honor of being his favorite person. Sammy follows Matt everywhere. He is a cuddler and he licks and gives kisses all the time. Sammy is still looking for that special family, even though he is in the perfect foster home, we still are in hopes of finding those special “Sammy Folks” We are also providing Sammy with some training, which will help expose Sammy to more situations and give his new adopters tools to be able to handle Sammy in new sitautions. Become Sammy hero! We love our Sammy! More pictures might be available on https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs at a later time. Nolan is finally ready to go to his forever home. Nolan is great with his foster pack, good with his furry foster brother and great with the resident cats. Nolan is not hindered by only having three legs, in fact he is able to navigate nicely on his three legs. Nolan is house trained. He loves his foster family and loves going on adventures in the car. This is a huge progress for him since he was very afraid of car rides when he first came into rescue. Nolan is a ham, he loves his toys, he loves climbing on the bed and especially loves to cuddle his favorite people. This boy has stolen all of our hearts.   Please note: We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is on our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. Nolan was born with a birth defect and his back foot never formed completely. His back leg was super short with a nub on the end. Nolan had learned to walk with his shorter leg, but it was apparent it left him vulnerable and fearful. We met Nolan on several occasions at the Oakland Shelter and we instantly fell in love with him. We wanted to help Nolan and be a part of his journey. We believed that if Nolan’s leg was amputated, he would be less vulnerable and have a better chance of thriving and ultimately being adopted. We are in hopes that Nolan world becomes a bigger and better place. Nolan is spending his first night in his new foster home. He has a fur foster brother and a wonderful family who will help Nolan to navigate through this new world. Update 04/16/2021 On Tuesday Nolan received a trans pelvic amputation. We believe Nolan was born with his leg partially deformed. The nub at the end of his leg he would rely on, but looked like it put lots of stress on his other leg. The back part of his body sloped to accommodate the uneven legs. Nolan slowly navigated around vulnerable with his deformed leg. In the animal world this leaves a animal prey for others in the pack, this usually meant death amongst the pack. This video is of Nolan running with his foster brother, Leo. It is amazing that only two days after major surgery Nolan is more fluid and agile than he has ever been. We were happy to share the updated videos with the staff and volunteers at Oakland Animal Shelter. Even they were happy for Nolan and very impressed. So thank you to Oakland Animal Services for working with us and being patient with CalPaws. Another special thank you to the Sacco family for being Nolan’s special family and amazing fosters. Adoption fees: $450 for dogs 12 months/younger, $400 for dogs 1-2 Yrs, $350 for dogs 3-5yrs, and $300 for 6yrs and older Max joined our pack last week from the Stanislaus Animal Shelter. Max is settling In nicely with his foster mom and dad, Susan and Chris. This is what they had to say about Max. Max is a very friendly and active German Shepherd. At 7 years old, he has a very sweet personality and would be great with an active family. He loves his walks and has even started running with his foster dad. He is well behaved indoors (no accidents at all) and doesn’t seem interested in chewing shoes or any other items in the house. Max is like a shadow around the house and in the yard, he loves spending time with people. Chris is working with Max on his leash manners and he has also had the chance to meet some other dogs. Max can get a little exuberant with other dogs, but responds well to direction from his leader and just wants to play. Max has met some younger kids (maybe 5 years old) and was friendly and well behaved with them. He is not cat tested. Part of the reason Max is so well behaved is that he came from a home environment and only ended up in the shelter because his owner passed away. Max would flourish in an active household where he could get some daily exercise. He is a friendly, well-balanced dog and will make a great companion to a lucky family. Max is fully vaccinated and neutered and weighs about 72lbs. Hello from 3 “Little Rascals” - Buck, Spanky and Alfalfa. We are the most adorable puppies (if we say so ourselves) and are getting cuter by the day! We will be ready to go to our forever homes soon, so we wanted to stop by and say hi here! We came to our foster family just a week back. Bella, our foster dog 🐕 mom, came from Calpaws K9 Rescue too! Our foster mom and her girls have been training us and giving us tons on love. We now know how to sit and even give a “paw” (oh my!) Don’t be mistaken though. We will be naughty puppies for a while. We will also get pretty big when we grow up. We will stop by again as we get more ready. For now, we can use all the love you have 😍 Spanky is the naughtiest of the litter. The smallest but no doubt the mightiest. He has a ton of energy and is always up for some play and exploration. Spanky is also the quickest to learn. He has mastered the sit and paw and is now learning to “down” Spanky is highly food motivated and even “asks” for treats. He always finishes up his food and won’t be small for much longer. We think he might grow up to be 60+ lbs.    Buck or Buckie as we call him is the largest in the litter. His eyes will melt your heart. He is literally a bug bear - fluffy and loving.  He loves his humans, his belly rubs and relaxing on his back. He is playful, yet calm. He is food motivated and a quick learner. He already knows sit and paw. He is eager to learn so much more. He even goes straight to his crate after playtime! Buckie will be a large dog (70lbs + ) when he grows up. He is already a healthy 15 lbs at 11 weeks. He is growing fast!    Alfalfa or Alfie as we call him is an adorable , calm (as calm as a puppy can be!) and fluffy puppy. We call him the escape artist (Houdini ;))  - he is always the first to get out of the playpen and hide under the couch.  Alfie loves people and he is quite happy by himself. He will play with his brothers but is also content to relax in a corner. Alfie knows sit and he is learning to give a paw.  PUPPY ADOPTIONS: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING A PUPPY, PLEASE NOTE THAT WE REQUIRE RECENT EXPERIENCE WITH RAISING A PUPPY, OBEDIENCE TRAINING EXPERIENCE, A GOOD SIZE BACK YARD, MOSTLY HOME, NO BABIES OR TODDLERS, AND A SOLID PLAYFUL, RESIDENT DOG (A PUPPY NEEDS A ROLE MODEL AND SOMEONE TO PLAY WITH).  More pictures might be available on https://www.calpaws.org/available-dogs at a later time.
