JJ is a 3 yo male black shepherd. Please note: We are a small rescue and do not have the resources to respond to inquiries. If a dog is on our website, it is still available. We can not arrange meet & greet without an application. We are not a shelter and do not have a facility. All our dogs are in foster homes. JJ came from Contra Costa Animal Shelter and Scooby came from the Oakland Animal Shelter. JJ was on the list to be euthanized and what we did was give him a second chance. We did learn about JJ past, he was not treated well and affording him training had given him the structure and environment conducive with being given the tools to become the best dog possible. When we first met JJ he was scared and defensive. Barking loudly inside his kennel so folks would stay away and it worked, but giving JJ that simple opportunity has allowed us to see the sweet JJ. His trainer at RDRF academy, Daniel, affectionately calls him Spock. He is a favorite at the training facility since he has flourished in his training. JJ had pledges given to him while he was located at the shelter and we believe if money is given to a dog for a certain purpose it goes to the dog for that purpose. So we decided the pledges would be put towards training to ensure he has the best opportunity at an amazing life with a good family. We matched his pledges and sent him to RFRD Academy located in San Jose. For the past weeks JJ has been a star student and he is quite the character. JJ is excited to see his peeps. He recognizes we are the people who saved him, he knows. He showers us with kisses and tail wags. He knows the minute we show up. He is super smart, and super willing to please. He is no longer fearful or defeated, but confident and proud. He is a big goof ball. He is active and would be a great hiking buddy. ---- JJ, #A0969435 is a 3 yo intact male black GSD UNALTERED 3 yo MALE , BLACK GSD mix who has been at the Shelter since 7/27/2021. He had been living in a public park and was captured by confining him to a public restroom. He was evasive and defensive in the field (BIG SURPRISE) and intolerant of handling on intake, so of course he was labeled as aggressive. At the time of his behavior assessment, JJ presented as too fearful to leave his kennel. He appeared to be willing to engage with people and had started eating in front of staff, but he is still anxious when approached. HE IS STARTING TO MAKE PROGRESS, SO WHY IS THE SHELTER FAST TRACKING HIM TO THE EUTH LIST?! Michelle Flemmer took JJ out of his kennel with no problem. None of the staff at the Shelter have been able to get him out. She said he is a totally different dog outside of his kennel. JJ greeted other dogs in his ward in a friendly and curious manner. He also enjoyed meeting strangers,, both male and female. He loved eating treats and knows how to sit and shake hands. He did not like having to go back into his kennel. Who can blame him?! JJ is at the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter at 4800 Imhoff in Martinez, CA. He is ONLY available to Rescue Groups. PLEASE SHARE AND PLEDGE AND HELP SAVE JJ ********************************************** So Maria and I scheduled an appointment at noon. We were given a time frame from 10:00 am to 2;00 pm. We showed up promptly and met with Nancy Rhee. She let us into the kennel where JJ was housed. He was shy and retreated to the back of the kennel. I had chicken treats and he decided immediately that these treats had value and he was more than happy to take them. At first I threw a few near him and eventually JJ was eating them out of my hand. I was able to place the slip over him and we headed out to the area where you can assess the dogs. For what ever reasons you are not able to take the dogs into the larger run area where they can really stretch their legs. This is huge for the large breed dogs. I let JJ decompress and run around before getting him to work on sitting and really assessing him. He was a really good boy, a bit aloof, but most shepherds are that way until they realize you could be part of the pack. Then it is all velcro. I must say we both liked him. He was sweet. He barked a few times at the shelter staff, but that is understandable. He did not want to return to his kennel. With a bit of a struggle and a few more treats he returned with out incident. We concluded our assessment and we left the shelter. I sent a follow up Email to Nancy Rhee, letting her know I liked him, but I was looking for a foster. Nancy replied and basically said JJ had run out of time and he needed a rescue group otherwise be was going to be euthanized. Btw, he had only been at Martinez since 07/27/21. I texted back that I was willing to pull him, but could they assist with getting him neutered. We came up with an arrangement and we will be picking this sweet boy up on Saturday. So we are looking for a foster for this boy. Jj did receive $700.00 in pledges from the community and we agreed that money needed to go towards JJ’s training. We are looking for two things, a choice of training. The first one being RFRD academy out of Milpitas and the seconds is K9 S.o.s training out of Galt. Both are good, but we are just looking at options and finding the best option for JJ. Lastly, we are looking for a foster. We think he is going to be an amazing dog and with the training he will have a really good skill set. So Saturday is a big day for us and for JJ. We will be looking for a new name and excited to get to know him and be a part of his journey.
