Sweet Penny first came to us in August 2015 as a charming and well balanced puppy from Humane Society of Imperial County, where she had been taken in as a stray. From the start, Penny was a fan favorite, never meeting a dog or a human she didn't like. She also had a goofy underbite and a twinkle in her eye that make her irresistible. She was quickly adopted out and we did not hear from her adopters again. Unfortunately, fast forward to this past February, and we got a call from a local shelter that Penny had been turned in as a stray again, almost 8 years from her original adoption date. Thankfully, TRD was still listed on the microchip so we were contacted. When we went to pick up Penny, we found her in pretty bad shape. Her skin was a mess and she was losing hair from the back half of her body. Amazingly, Penny's charm, balance, and wonderful sweet and goofy spirit (and the goofy underbite!) were still intact. Despite Herculean efforts, we could not get in contact with her adopters to find out what happened. We reclaimed Penny at the shelter and whisked her away to a loving foster home (after stopping for a much deserved puppiccino), where she is healing well from her skin issues and getting the love and attention she deserves. Penny behaves wonderfully with other dogs and is thrilled when she gets a chance to run around with new friends. Penny's foster family describes her as calm and confident. Despite what must have been an extended time of neglect from her humans, she still loves people and would settle in well with all sorts of families. Penny can be a vocal girl and sometimes uses her mouth when she plays, so older children and dogs who understand her play style would be best for her new family. Penny’s 23-pound frame is a perfect size for most households and at 8 years young, Penny still has plenty of life and love to share. Penny already knows several commands, including sit, off, fetch, and name recall. This lady of a certain age would be excited learn more skills and tricks, which is also a great way for her to bond with her new family. If you would like to meet Penny, and give her the happy and loving home life she truly deserves, please fill out the TRD application online and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Hi, my name is Watermelon but you can call me adorable! I am a 9 month old pug, petite at just 16 pounds. My favorite things to do are to play with my foster siblings, they are big dogs and I am not scared at all. I have a 4 year old human in my foster home who I love love love! I jump on him sometimes and he doesn’t like that, but I get so excited when I’m around him.   I think I am perfect just the way I am but foster mom thinks I need to try harder on my potty training. It’s hard cuz I didn’t have very good caregivers before I went to the shelter and all this stuff is new and hard for me. I don’t love the crate but I sleep there every night and stay there when my foster humans are gone. I will make a great guard dog because I will let you know when there are strangers afoot. I won’t do anything to protect you but I have a ferocious bark that will scare them away! (Watermelon’s foster disagrees with this statement, there is nothing ferocious about Watermelon.) Leash walking is also new so I guess I could try harder not to run in circles when I’m on a walk.   My favorite things are FOOD and TREATS, I like cheeses and cheeseburgers and all the snacks my human boy drops on the floor. Foster mom gives me great face massages, I love those! We have tons of fun toys to play with, and after all my play time zoomies I like to nap.    If you are looking for a new doggy to add to your home you should meet me! I do need someone patient to help me learn all the stuff good dogs need to know. show less

Meet Nymeria! This gorgeous girl is a 1.5 year old husky weighing in at just under 50 lbs. Nymeria was found by a good samaritan wandering the streets. When no one came to claim her, TRD made her part of our rescue fam. So far, she is relatively mellow for a husky! If you know huskies- they are usually anything but mellow, so this energy level is a welcome surprise. Nymeria is house trained, crate trained (although she still has 10 min tantrums when she goes in), and is good with kids and dogs! Things Nymeria will need to work on are leash walking and her mild separation anxiety.  She whines and howls when her people leave for about 10 min until she settles down. If left out of the crate she has been known to shred a pillow or cushion. She has already come a long way with her separation anxiety in her foster home, so we expect with a committed, knowledgeable adopter, she will continue to improve with training, structure and routine. Nuymeria's ideal home will have a secure yard, no cats and preferably room to run and play with a canine sibling! Her foster mom describes her as sweet, goofy and playful with an overall great demeanor. She loves to play with her foster brother, get belly rubs and just be around her people. If you'd like to give this sweet girl a home please fill out an adoption application.     show less

Kobe is a sweet handsome Boxer mix. At two-years-old, what you see is what you get with this guy including his adorable underbite. Kobe was adopted from TRD as a puppy and his family was very sad to have to let him go. Weighing in at 45 pounds, he may look like the kind of boxer that could be a champ in the ring, but Kobe is a lover not a fighter. His foster Mom tells us that when at the dog park it often looks like he is telling the other dogs to behave. He is well-trained and knows lots of commands like sit, stay, down, and shake. He is house-trained, crate-trained, good with cats and dogs, enjoys the company of people he meets, and gets lots of compliments because he is a very well-behaved good-looking boy. Kobe is still young and energetic so a home with small children may not be a good fit. Walks or runs with his people and trips to the dog park are his favorite ways to burn off his energy. A fenced yard would be perfect for Kobe, but with plenty of outings he would be fine. Kobe does get excited in the car and the “come” command can be challenging when he is having a great time. He is sometimes a little shy if meeting someone new but warms up quickly and likes to lean on the friends he makes. Kobe loves playing with all kinds of toys and will check out the options before selecting the one that is perfect for the occasion. Overall Kobe is just a really goofy friendly pup with a terrific disposition, and we expect him to adjust quickly to any loving home. If you think Kobe may be the perfect addition to your family, please fill out our adoption application and someone will be in touch with you soon. show less

Meet Gasper. This little cutie came to us along with his mom, a petite scruffy terrier, and his four siblings. At 3-months Gasper is still small and does his neighborhood exploring in a puppy pouch. We expect him to be medium sized when fully grown.  His foster Mom describes him as playful and calm for a puppy. He generally naps for an hour at a time during the day and then it’s playtime. Gasper loves to spend time with his 5-year-old foster brother running around the house. He’s a polite playmate who will bark from a respectful distance if he wants a toy, requesting to share rather than trying to steal it. He particularly enjoys stuffed toys. Gasper is nearly house trained. Frequent trips outside will be key to establishing good potty habits. He spends his nights and very brief periods alone during the day in a playpen with a comfy bed for snoozing. Gasper is good with other dogs and enjoys being with people including children. It’s time for him to find his forever family and begin leash and crate training and learning commands. Someone who has time to work with him is critical at this stage in his development. If you are ready to add a cute, friendly, happy go lucky puppy to your life please submit an adoption application and one of our Adoption Coordinators will contact you soon. Gasper will be waiting. show less

Meet Freddie, a loving and leggy poodle mix looking for a family who will appreciate his pro level cuddling skills and playful ways. Freddie came to TRD as an owner surrender. At first Freddie, affectionately known as Freddie Spaghetti, was a little slow to warm up to his foster family. He needed time to adjust to a new environment and a new canine foster sibling. Once Freddie decompressed in his foster home, his true, adorable colors shone through. Freddie is a lover through and through, and now happily greets his foster family with toys and "hugs". He also has been great with human house guests at his foster home. He is working on his crate training, and his place training. He'd rather be with his people but he's starting to pick up these skills. Freddie is quite the gentleman on leash, and happily and politely greets other dogs when he's out for walks. He'd love to have a canine sibling in his new forever family. Freddie also is an extremely low shedder, and now that he is on the right track with nutrition and grooming, he is a very handsome and generally low maintence guy. Freddie does get nervous with groomers and veterinarians. He will need slow and patient introductions in these settings. Freddie weighs in at 15 pounds, and is about seven years old, in the prime of his life. We are recommending a household of adults, and possibly older respectful kids, for Freddie. Are you looking for a saucy dish with a healthy helping of sweetness? Hi! My name is Brownie and I’m the ultimate sweet treat. I’m a miniature poodle and weight only about 4lbs. I’m a sweet senior at 10 years old and I’d love to have a warm bed and some friendly faces to spend time with.  I’m looking for a new family to enjoy life with because my previous owners weren’t able to keep me since they were having a hard time. I’ve had all of my teeth removed recently so I’m healthy again and ready to enjoy life. I may not have any teeth left but I’ve still got a great smile to share.    My favorite thing to do is spend time with humans or other animals. I’ll follow you around the house and I’m happy to just quietly sit on your lap while we watch tv or go out to breweries or coffee shops. I love meeting new people and dogs- but I don’t need very long walks. I know I can’t go everywhere and I do need my rest so you’ll be happy to know I do well being left alone for short periods of time and I’m crate trained as well.    I want to find someone to love who likes to snuggle and has some warm blankets for me. I’m ready to be your snuggle buddy and I’m great at coming to run errands. I can’t wait to meet my match! If you are interested in meeting me you can fill out an adoption application on the rescue website. show less
