"Suki" means "to love" in Japanese, and it fits our sweet little Suki perfectly. Suki came to TRD from Chula Vista Animal Control Facility, where they discovered she had a tumor in her armpit. The shelter did an initial surgery to remove the tumor and then requested that we take her to make sure that her medical needs were properly attended to. One look at Suki's adorable face and we were sold! Suki visited TRD's vet, where they performed one additional surgery to make sure we had good margins on her tumor. The surgery was successful and Suki is cancer-free and ready to start a new life with her forever family as a happy and healthy girl. Suki is around 7 years young, and weighs in at a small but sturdy 12 to 14 pounds. Suki is a fun and social girl who will do well with an active family. Suki is great on the leash, and loves going out for walks and meeting canine buddies when she is out and about. She has great leash manners and needs very little correction. Her foster mom reports that she is a pleasure to walk. Suki has a fun and frisky side, with a little puppy playfulness still left in her! For the most part, however, she is characteristically calm and sweet with both people and dogs. Suki does show some signs of separation anxiety when she is left alone too long, so she would prefer a family who understands this behavior and can work with her. (All adoptions with TRD come with a complimentary training session.) With consistency and love, Suki can overcome this issue. Overall, Suki is a real pleasure and will make her new family very happy with her loving ways and her lovely social behavior. If you would like to meet Suki, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Three-and-a-half-year-old,16 lb. Dexter is a super-smart, spirited and affectionate miniature schnauzer-yorkie mix. This unfortunate fellow was rescued from the ER of a shelter in January 2015 where he had been brought in with a broken pelvis and a fractured leg, possibly the result of being hit by a car. Dexter had been adopted for a year, but recently returned because his adopters had a baby. Since schnauzers can be a bit bossy, we believe Dexter would do best in a home with no young children. After staying with a trainer for the past 2 months, Dexter has brushed up on his training skills (which he quickly remembered) and is ready for his FOREVER home. Typical of his schnauzer breed, this active, bright little guy is thrilled to run, play, and wrestle. He gets quite excited when he hears his leash coming out! Dexter entertains himself by following around his dog foster siblings, playing with toys, and shadowing his foster parents - even trying to involve himself in their exercise routines. Quite personable, Dexter enjoys meeting new people and showers his foster parents with kisses, loves his belly rubs, and naps contentedly at their feet when he can. Dexter's foster mom says Dexter is the smartest foster they have ever had. He already knows half a dozen commands - sit, stay, shake, leave it, come and name recall - and looks you right in the eye while waiting to know what you want from him. His foster parents report they are delighted to keep up with his obvious need for intellectual challenges and say the fact that he is very treat and toy motivated helps. He is also fully house trained and uses the doggy door to go outside. With his high energy level and sometimes protective nature, Dexter will do best in a home without young children or other assertive canines. He deserves a family who has had experience with active, intelligent dogs and can keep him mentally and physically stimulated. Are you looking for a second (or third) dog to round out your pack? Meet Wil the Wheaten! A TRD volunteer was out for a walk with her dogs when an adorable, if somewhat weather-worn, Wheaten terrier came out of the woods and followed them home. He was dubbed Wil the Wheaten, and it was obvious that he had been on his own for some time. He was very nervous around people but definitely wanted to be part of a pack again. After checking around, the volunteer discovered that Wil had been abandoned and that kind neighbors had been feeding him. After confirming that Wil had no owner, TRD brought him into our vet, where it was discovered that poor Wil had 2 ruptured eardrums, and that his remaining teeth were beyond repair and would need to be removed. Wil also needed to be neutered. Despite all of these health issues, with a little love and good nutrition, Wil's sweetness and spunk soon emerged. He settled in with his foster family and warmed up right away to the other dogs in the household. It didn't take long for Wil get the hang of house training. He also quickly claimed the nicest dog bed in the house as his own. Wil is still skittish around people, but he is very comfortable around dogs, and he seems to love children. He has definitely improved greatly with his people interactions (he's still a little unsure, but his inclination is to like people and get love from them). He will need a family with a quiet, gentle vibe so that he can continue to reassimiliate into life with people, and he would definitely prefer a home with a confident dog (or 2!) Our vets estimate that Wil is 5 to 7 years old. He is on the smaller side for a Wheaten at around 30 pounds. Wil is now healthy, with his dental work done and his ears healed up. Wil is a great dog with lots of potential. He is ready to start the next chapter of his life filled with nothing but love (and delicious soft food). If you would like to meet Wil Wheaten, please fill out an adoption application and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Sweet and smart, Fawn is an exceptional girl with a wonderful personality. Fawn originally came to TRD in December 2015 from the Humane Society of Imperial County, where she was taken in as a stray. At that time she was 4 months olds and already knew some basic commands, and was well on her way to being a great addition to her forever family. Fawn was adopted in January 2016, but unfortunately her family returned her to TRD in May 2016 when they deployed and couldn't take her along. We are sad for Fawn that she has lost her first family, but she has settled in well with her foster family and is patiently waiting for her new forever family to find her. Fawn is a little shy with new people to start, but she quickly warms up and then shows her sweet and spunky side. She is very playful with her foster family, which includes 2 dogs and a cat. She gets along great with everyone and would love to be part of a family with other animals, especially other dogs to play with. She has also lived with children and does well with them. Fawn is very smart and has learned even more commands, and she would excel in a basic training class with her new family. Fawn is a great size at about 25 pounds, and at 9 months old as of June 2016, we don't think she will get too much bigger. Fawn is a fun and loving pup who would love to find a family who matches her fun energy and her affectionate side. If you would like to meet Fawn, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to set up a meet and greet. show less
