Sweet and handsome Hunter is one of our "Dolly puppies". About a year and a half ago we rescued his mom Dolly when she was very pregnant, and Hunter was one of seven puppies born in her litter on September 20, 2016. We adopted Hunter and his sister Carrie out to a family with 2 young children, who the dogs loved. Unfortunately the family is getting divorced and could no longer care for Hunter and Carrie. Carrie has already been placed in a new loving forever home, and now it's Hunter's turn! Hunter is a sweet and cuddly guy, according to his foster mom. He's a sweet little lap dog in a 30-pound dog body. Hunter also loves to run, and is quite sporty. He loves going to the beach and letting other dogs chase him. He is also fond of chasing the birds at the beach. He has a sweet, fun, dopey personality. Hunter's foster mom also reports that Hunter is great on leash and enjoys a good walk. He does sometimes get excited when he sees other dogs when he's out and about, but he is easily redirected. Hunter does tend to get nervous when dogs are super eager to play with him. He tends remove himself from the situation if it's too much for him to handle. His new family will want to work on building up Hunter's confidence. His foster mom has done a great job of setting him in the right direction. He has grown so much and continues to grow, and his new forever family will want to continue to build on the progress he's made. He does great with the training exercises from TRD's trainer! And we provide a complimentary training session with each adoption. Hunter is a smart and trainable guy, and he loves his people, so continuing to work with Hunter will be easy and fun. Hunter sometimes vocalizes with a whine when he's nervous, which actually makes it easier to understand when he's uncomfortable and help him relax. Hunter will be a great addition to a family with another confident dog, as he seems to be sensitive to surrounding social cues, and also loves canine company. Hunter is truly a diamond in the "ruff", and can't wait to settle in with his new family. If you would like to meet Hunter, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Meet Ollie, a gentle and sweet-natured 1.5-year-old Shih Tzu mix who came to TRD in March 2018. Ollie hasn't lived an easy life so far--when he was found, Ollie was a stray with long, matted hair, and one of his front legs has been permanently warped beyond use (possibly a birth defect). But with his resilient spirit and loving personality, Ollie has come a long way in just a few weeks in his foster home. Ollie likes to be with his foster family and loves to cuddle with them. His favorite activity is cuddling in bed with his foster mom. He is great with adults, kids, dogs, and cats in his foster home. He also likes to run around the yard, although he does get tired easily running on 3 legs. But that hasn't stopped Ollie from becoming a master fetcher. He loves to play fetch everyday! Apart from fetch, Ollie understands other commands like Sit, Come, and Name Recall. Ollie has been impatient with his food and tends to pounce on his food at meal times--possibly something he caught on from his stray doggy days. His foster family is working on this with him. On walks around the neighborhood, he is calm on the leash and generally non-reactive. If your family is looking for a low energy dog with a ton of personality, this 10-pound cuddling nugget might be the perfect match for you. If you would like to meet Ollie, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch. show less

Alexander, TRD's latest recruit, is a handsome Australian Shepherd Mix who is sure to steal your heart with his dashing good looks with a charming personality to match. Alex has a smooth beige brown coat and a widow's mark on his forehead, which give him a unique and dashing look. At 1.5 years as of March 2018, he is full grown at about 45 pounds, making him an ideal addition to a family looking to adopt a smart, medium sized dog. According to his foster dad, Alex is naturally a friendly, calm, and confident dog. He is well-mannered and easy-going with people and dogs in his home and when he meets them in his daily walks. He responds well to correction from dogs in his foster home and has been respectful with them. He loves to play with them in the backyard and has been great on leashed walks as well. At home, his favorite toys are Nylabones. Alex is working on his crate training and he is already comfortable sleeping in his crate over night. He has counter surfed and chewed on non-toy items in his home on occasion--he responds well to redirection and is learning to phase out of these hangover habits from his puppy days. As a medium sized dog, daily walks, exercise and mental stimulation are important to ensure Alex is happy, content, and tired. Like most Shepherd mixes, Alexander is a smart dog and loves to learn new commands and tricks. He has already picked up "Sit" and name recall. If you and your family are currently looking for a friendly, out-going, and charming dog to adopt, Alex is going to be a perfect match for you, however he is a herding dog so he will not do well in a home with young children. If you would like to meet Alexander, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Attention Schnauzer lovers! Meet Maggie, a 5-year-old Schnauzer who took the freedom ride with TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County in March 2018. Maggie is full grown and weighs about 16 pounds. Maggie does not shed, which makes her a great fit for adopters looking for a hypoallergenic dog. Although Maggie is young in age, she is an old soul at heart. She is sweet-natured, mellow, and attentive. She does not need much attention (seeking attention is for silly puppies, and Maggie is way too dignified for that). She just loves to be around people and follows her foster mom around the house. Maggie is affectionate in her own unique way--cuddling isn't her style, but she likes to sit in her foster mom's lap. She also enjoys a good belly rub. Maggie is currently working on her house training skills, along with learning some basic commands. True to her personality, Maggie does not play much with toys or other dogs but she likes to go on walks around the neighborhood. She has been great on the leash. She is not reactive to other dogs or people. Maggie would be a great addition to a family seeking a sweet and mellow lower energy dog. If you would like to meet Maggie, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Are you looking for a smart, sweet, cuddly, spunky puppy? If so, Sugar is your girl! Sugar, a Catahoula leopard mix, came to us on a Wings of Rescue flight from a shelter in Louisiana. Sugar was found as a young stray puppy in LA. Her age is estimated to be about 4-5 months old now; a perfect age for adoption! Sugar is potty trained, crate trained and is coming along nicely with other training including name recall and walking on leash. Sugar is about 18 pounds now and will probably reach about 30 pounds. She is currently in a foster home with another dog and kids and is perfect with everyone. Her foster mom reports she, of course, has some puppy behaviors, as in stealing socks and the occasional mouthing while playing, but overall she is a fantastic puppy. Sugar has some energy to burn and some herding tendencies, so she’ll need an active family that respects her need for exercise and mental stimulation. She is athletic and agile and loves to jump and leap around while playing. We can see her potential as an agility dog! She is very smart and extremely food motivated which will help with training. She loves to play with other dogs and so far hasn’t met a canine or human she doesn’t love. Her foster family adores her and says she’s the perfect balance of puppy playfulness, medium to high energy, and the ability to just chill and snuggle on the couch! If you’d like to meet Sugar, please fill out and application on The Rescued Dog’s website. show less

Carrie is a 1.5 year old, sweet beagle mix. TRD saved Carrie’s pregnant mom back in 2016, and she was adopted as a 4 month old puppy. This sweets girl, came back to us a couple months ago through no fault of her own. Since having her back in foster care we’ve assessed her health, been helping her gain confidence with training and we have been socializing her with dogs in various environments. Carrie was diagnosed with juvenile onset hip dysplasia and had a juvenile pubic symphysiodesis (JPS) procedure done as a young pup prior to her adoption. Upon her return to TRD, Carrie has been seen by our vet and has had an orthopedist consult for her hip dysplasia. Carrie will need a few supplements and medications throughout her life for her hips. As of now she does not seem to be in pain and runs and plays happily. As with any hip dysplasia diagnosis, supplements and exercise management is key. Carrie enjoys her humans a lot! She is very affectionate and looks to her humans for guidance and confidence. Carrie is crate trained, potty trained and is perfecting her leash manners. Continuing her training program will be important. She has been at dog parks and is curiously friendly and interested in other dogs. On leash, slow, respectful introductions are best. Her foster mom adores her and says she’s sweet, goofy and happy. Carrie has had a bit of a rough road and we’re looking for a calm environment and a patient family who will enjoy giving Carrie everything she deserves. show less

Meet Crouton, an adorable 4 month old Australian Shepherd Mix who joined TRD from the Imperial County Shelter in Februrary 2018. Crouton weighs about 25 pounds and his full grown weight should be in the 40-50 pound range. For a large breed puppy, Crouton has a sweet and mellow temperament. He is playful and easy going with all people and dogs he meets. He is also great with cats in his foster home- curious yet patient and respectful (he can be adopted into a family with cats). On trips to the local dog park, Crouton has been a well behaved puppy and played nicely with dogs of all sizes and age. When full grown, with his breed mix and his personality, Crouton will be a great fit for an active family. During playtime, Crouton is a complete goofball, cracking up his foster mom with his belly flops and other unique antics. He enjoys running, sniffing and playing around with his foster canine sibling. His favorite toys are antler chews and squeaky toys. After playtime, Crouton loves to snuggle with his foster family and snuggling with a puppy with coat as soft as cotton is just as perfect as it sounds. Crouton is still learning to be independent- his foster mom is teaching him good crate manners along with potty training.Crouton also loves to go on walks around the neighborhood. He is still learning how to walk on a leash, and he tends to get anxious with unfamiliar sights and sounds. His foster mom is teaching him good leash manners. He is a fast learning puppy, and has come a long way in a few weeks. He also understand commands like Sit, Name Recall and Down. Like most puppies, Crouton tries to chew on shoes and socks but gives it back to his foster mom when redirected with an appropriate chewing toy. Welcome Reindeer puppies! Mom Mitzi, a sweet beagle mix, came to TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County right before Christmas, very pregnant. She held out until New Year's Day, and gave birth to six very adorable puppies, Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen, Comet, and Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen! These adorable puppies each have their own look and personalities. We think there were probably 2 dads, one a white poodle mix guy, and the other maybe a terrier mix? Whatever the dads were, Mitzi sure made some cute pups. Comet is a fun-loving, confident puppy, and the biggest of the litter. He also has a very sweet personality, according to his foster mom. This guy is the instigator of the litter, and always seems to be up to something. He is a smart little guy and would love learning tricks. He likes to be entertained and will need exercise to keep him stimulated. He wouldn't necessarily need another dog in the home, but he would enjoy having a canine sibling around to play with. Mom Mitzi is about 25 pounds full grown, and we think these puppies will be in the 15 to 30 pound range full grown. The pups are 2 months old as of March 1st, and will be spayed or neutered and up to date on shots at the time of adoption. If you would like to meet any of the Reindeer puppies, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

These adorable puppies each have their own look and personalities. We think there were probably 2 dads, one a white poodle mix guy, and the other maybe a terrier mix? Whatever the dads were, Mitzi sure made some cute pups. Handsome Blitzen is the most independent of the Reindeer puppies. When the rest of the puppies are snuggling together, Blitzen can usually be found snoozing in his own space. According to his foster mom, Blitzen is great at self entertaining. He will be a toy guy as he gets older. Blitzen was the first of the puppies to brave the outdoors. He is smart and clever, and will love learning behaviors and tricks with his new family. As an independent guy, he would probably be fine as an only dog, but he is also agreeable to canine company. Mom Mitzi is about 25 pounds full grown, and we think these puppies will be in the 15 to 30 pound range full grown.
