When we met Trixie, she was languishing in the shelter in Imperial County. She had come in as a stray and she had a horrific laceration all the way around her neck, like she had been tied up too tightly with a rope or a wire, and it had started cutting into her body. TRD team members were visiting the shelter where Trixie was living, depressed and despondent. At first we weren't sure what to expect from her. Fortunately, all it took was one walk with us to see that Trixie had a lot of light and love inside of her. We had a hard time getting her back into the shelter, she enjoyed her taste of freedom so much! We knew then that we had to help this sweet baby. With some serious networking, we were able to secure Trixie a foster, some sponsors, and eventually a freedom ride to San Diego, where she is currently living the dream in a loving foster home with 2 other dogs. Trixie has needed some TLC to get her wounds cleaned up and her general health up to snuff. She quickly proved that she has a great temperament in spite of her rough life pre-TRD. She has not yet met a human she doesn't like. She is sweet and patient with children. She gets along great with her new canine foster siblings and she is completely housetrained and crate trained. At 2 years old, Trixie is a great age to start her forever life with her new family. She is very smart, affectionate, and eager to please, so training with Trixie will be easy and fun. She loves a good squeaky stuffed animal, and using a good squeaker is almost as effective as treats when asking Trixie to sit. Now that Trixie is healthy, it is clear that she is a great dog, ready to enjoy her forever life with some lucky people. Trixie is a 54-pound beauty. She does show a little too much interest in cats so we would prefer to place her in a home with no cats or small animals. If you are interested in meeting Trixie, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to arrange a meet and greet. show less

Snickers, a one year old Schnauzer/Terrier mix is a playful, sweet, smart girl who is beginning to learn the basic manners and rules of a household as well as being on a leash. She's realizing walks are not something to resist or be anxious over, but something to love. Practice makes perfect! She no longer pulls and is practicing her attention to avoid distractions; she is becoming very focused! She loves to be outside and plays well with dogs, but can sometimes be intimidated and reactive when she encounters other dogs while on the leash. She has gone to training at Canine Education to refine her leash anxiety and would appreciate a family dedicated to continuing this work. We have no doubt Snickers will be a wonderful addition to a family with older children and probably a house without cats. This high energy girl loves a good run, loves to chew on bones and will insert herself for cuddles whenever she can! Snickers is almost 100% house trained and completely crate trained. She's proved great in her crate for up to 5 hrs at a time during the day as long as she gets the exercise and training she thrives on. True to her Schnauzer/Terrier blend she will rule the roost if allowed and will soak up as much attention as she can get. Snickers will make a wonderful, loving, loyal and fun companion for a family willing to set boundaries, socialize her and exercise her appropriately. If you would like to meet Snickers, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to set up a meet and greet. show less

If you are looking for an enthusiastic, affectionate new friend, we would love to introduce you to Opal! Opal is an adorable Scottie/Schnauzer mix who loves to snuggle and be petted when she is not out playing or meeting new friends. She is great with kids and boasts wonderful habits at home. Opal does not chew on things that she is not supposed to, is house-trained, and spends the night in her crate. Also, Opal knows how to sit and come, and has good name recall. For the most part, Opal is great with other dogs. When she is out on walks or at the dog park she loves to make new friends with other dogs and people. While on leash, Opal does generally well; however, when she sees other dogs who she wants to play with she tends to get excited and pull a bit on her leash. Also, she is afraid of skateboards and loud cars and buses, but this type of behavior is common in small and midsize dogs. Opal weighs 21 pounds and will be 2 years old as of September 2015. TRD got Opal from the Devore shelter in April 2014. She was adopted quickly but came back to TRD through no fault of her own, when her family's situation changed and they could no longer care for her. Her former family assures us that Opal is a great dog, and they have provided us with positive reports about her playfulness, cuteness, cuddliness, and overall great behavior. Opal is a sweet, adorable, and playful dog who is ready to grace a household in need of a fun and loving pet. If you would like to meet Opal, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to set up a meet and greet! show less

Are you looking for a ridiculously cute companion to accompany you on all of life's adventures? Meet Seamus! Seamus is a friendly and fun-loving Scottish terrier mix who came to TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County. Seamus loves everyone he meets, both human and canine, and is a real champ at TRD's events. He has never met a dog he hasn't liked, and he seems to really understand other doggies' play styles. He can be frisky but also knows when to approach with a calmer energy. Pretty amazing for a 6-month-old puppy! Seamus is really smart. He has already learned his name and also knows "sit". At 6 months as of October 2015, Seamus is at the perfect age to start basic training with his new family. He is so smart and eager to please; training with Seamus will be fun and easy. Seamus is already crate trained, and has almost mastered his house training. Seamus has great natural leash manners, and loves a good walk with his pack. Seamus is about 12 pounds at 6 months old, and we anticipate that he will be between 20 and 25 pounds when he is full grown. His silky low-maintenance coat is low shedding and so handsome. This guy is an all around great pup. If you would like to meet Seamus, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Cookie is an adorable bichon mix puppy who is fun and exuberant despite her rough start to life. When Cookie came to TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County, she was favoring her hind left leg. Close investigation by our vets revealed that Cookie had a serious, complicated fracture in her femur, one that she had sustained several months previously, and the best course of action was to amputate her broken leg. Fast forward to 2 weeks post-surgery, and it's impossible to keep this tripod cutie down. Cookie loves to walk and play with her canine foster siblings. She has great natural leash manners. She also loves her trips to the dog park, where she loves to play chase with her buddies. She has a fun and playful puppy energy wherever she is. Cookie also has a lovey, snuggly side and is very connected to her humans. She just wants to be near her friends! Cookie is about 9 months old as of October 2015, so she still has a lot of silly puppy energy, usually followed by a typical puppy nap. She got the hang of tripod life very quickly, but occasionally she still misjudges her abilities and skids out or crashes into things, so she may need some gentle guidance with that. Cookie is about 12 pounds as of October 2015, and we estimate that she might put on 3 to 5 more pounds before she is full grown. If you would like to meet Cookie, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Triton is a very sweet, fun loving boxer who came to TRD from The Humane Society of Imperial County. When Triton first entered his foster home, he was emaciated, refused to eat, and emotionally shut down. With time, his foster family nursed him back to health and his spirit blossomed. Triton is six years old but young at heart. Like most boxers, Triton is kind of a clown. He's a bit clumsy at times and likes to chase brooms and vacuums but will always keep you entertained. Triton is also very affectionate and loves to cuddle. Triton is house trained, very well mannered and knows to stay off of the furniture if that's what you prefer but he really enjoys a comfy dog bed. He's so polite and he will never complain about your cooking because he loves to eat! Triton is a bit on the small side for a boxer weighing 40 lbs and he loves to play with other dogs of all sizes. He even behaves very well around cats and birds. Triton has a very mellow personality and knows when to be gentle which makes him great with small children and the elderly, but he does enjoy being active. He loves going on walks, playing at dog park, squeaky toys, tennis balls and tug of war are some of his favorites, Triton is an all around perfect family dog and will fit in happily with anyone willing to give him the love and quality time he desires. If you think Triton sounds like a good fit with your family and you would like to meet him in person, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to set up a meet and greet. show less

Sweet Annie was originally found by a good Samaritan walking through the streets of the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Good Samaritan took Annie in and asked a local organization, Hope for Paws, for help placing Annie. In turn Hope for Paws asked TRD if we could take on Annie as one of our own. We happily obliged, as Annie is a great example about everything that is wonderful about pit bull type dogs. She is smart, fun, loyal, and extremely loving. Annie lives with a foster who has a frequent canine visitor, and she loves going to the dog park, where she makes friends with other dogs and humans alike. Annie is social and sporty, but not super high energy. With a little daily exercise, Annie is happy to settle down at home and just relax. Annie is a natural for training, and already knows sit, stay, and come. She will be happy to learn whatever her human friends teach her. Annie is a snuggler, and she's not shy about it! If you are looking for a large lap dog type, Annie is definitely your girl. Annie is about 1 year old as of August 2015. She weighs in at a solid 60 pounds and we believe she is full grown. If you are interested in meeting Annie, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to set up a meet and greet. show less

Magnificent Marley came to TRD as an owner surrender. We heard that Marley was on the way to pound in San Bernardino because her family was moving and they couldn't take her along. We were able to intercept her and take her into the rescue directly and spare her the horrors of the animal shelter. Great Danes are one of our favorite breeds; they are known for their loyalty, their calm, even temperament, and of course their beauty. Marley is a quintessential Dane. She is calm and relaxed in her foster home. Her foster mom describes her as a "big love muffin" and a "gentle giant". She currently lives with two other dogs, one small and one medium-sized, and everyone gets along great. Marley is about 1 and a half years old as of September 2015, and it is obvious that she hasn't had much training. She walks calmly on a leash, but she can weave around. She is still working on her house manners, but has had trouble leaving human food alone. (When you are as tall as the kitchen counter, that stuff can be extra tempting!) She is almost house trained, and gets better about it every day. She can be a little skittish around loud or unfamiliar noises. Marley will need a confident leader to show her the ropes and build up her confidence. Marley truly is a diamond in the rough, and is ready to start her life with her forever family. Marley weighs in at 90 pounds, and is up to date on all her shots. If you would like to meet Marley, please fill out an application on TRD's website and an adoption coordinator will contact you to set up a meet and greet. show less
