Welcome Reindeer puppies! Mom Mitzi, a sweet beagle mix, came to TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County right before Christmas, very pregnant. She held out until New Year's Day, and gave birth to six very adorable puppies, Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen, Comet, and Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen! These adorable puppies each have their own look and personalities. We think there were probably 2 dads, one a white poodle mix guy, and the other maybe a terrier mix? Whatever the dads were, Mitzi sure made some cute pups. Dasher is most like her mom Mitzi in looks. According to her foster mom, Dasher has a bold personality, and is tough and very solid. Dasher also has a sweet side, and her foster mom reports that she is the most intelligent pup of the bunch. It's not necessary for Dasher to have a canine companion in her new home but she will get bored without entertainment. We think she will be the kind of dog who will love toys and other stimulation when she gets older. Mom Mitzi is about 25 pounds full grown, and we think these puppies will be in the 15 to 30 pound range full grown. The pups are 2 months old as of March 1st, and will be spayed or neutered and up to date on shots at the time of adoption. If you would like to meet any of the Reindeer puppies, please fill out an application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Adorable pug alert #2! Lucy came to TRD from the Humane Society of Imperial County in February 2018. She and her live-in boy friend Poncho were used as breeding partners by a backyard breeder in Brawley, but they managed to escape and make their way to HSOIC, where TRD gladly picked them up and whisked them away to San Diego. Lucy is a friendly, playful, and energetic dog. There isn't a soul Lucy has met she didn't like--she is friendly with people, children, dogs, and cats. She is just about as pugalicious as a pug can be. Lucy weighs in at 20 pounds and she likes to stay in shape with daily leashed walks (she's great on the leash) and dog park visits on the weekend. Since this is first time living inside a home, Lucy is currently picking up crate and house training. She occasionally has accidents inside the home but is getting better at it everyday. At meal times, Lucy tends to guard her food from other dogs. Her foster mom is teaching her to be confident and phase out of this habit. Now that her breeding days are behind her, Lucy is a full time professional cuddler. She is a great companion and loves to be with her humans at all times and shower them with kisses. If you would like to meet Lucy, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Senshi is a 3 year old poodle/terrier mix (mostly just a fluffy cotton ball) and weighs about 15 pounds. Senshi came to TRD when his family relocated to Hawaii and were forced to downsize their doggie pack. According to his foster mom, he is the happiest dog you could ever meet. He constantly wants to give love and affection to all humans he is introduced to. He is a friendly with humans and dogs in his foster home and the ones he meets on his walks. Other than walks, he likes to romp around with his foster siblings in the backyard. In his down time, Senshi enjoys chewings on some yummy bully sticks. Senshi is fully crate trained and house trained. He knows basic commands like Come and Name Recall. Senshi is a mellow, laidback dog. Sweet Star came to us from Louisiana in September 2017 after Hurricane Harvey. We took her on knowing that she was heart worm positive, and also knowing that we could give her as good a chance as anyone at beating a heart worm infection. Fast forward five months, and we are happy and proud to share that Star is heart worm free and ready for the rest of her life! Because she's been with her foster for five months, we've gotten to know Star very well. Let's just say that this funny girl does not lack personality! Star's foster mom reports that Star is great on leash and loves a good walk. Star likes meeting other dogs, and is quite social with her canine buddies. She also is especially compassionate and connected to humans, without being needy or overbearing. She loves a good belly rub, but is also content to entertain herself at home. And talk about smart! Star loves to learn, and is easily trained. She has some fun tricks up her sleeve, including "high five", as well as the basics (Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Name Recall, and Shake). Star's foster mom let us know that she doesn't really bark (except when she's dreaming of chasing bunnies). Overall, this little gem of a dog is pretty much perfect! And at about two and a half years old as of early 2018, she is the perfect age to start a new life with her forever family. Star weighs in at a lovely 26 pounds. She is house trained and crate trained, and ready to be part of your life! Calling all tripod fans! Introducing Dakota, an 11-month-old shepherd mix who came to TRD on a Wings of Rescue flight from the hurricane affected areas of Louisiana. She weighs about 25 pounds and may put on a few more pounds, but is essentially full grown as of November 2017. Despite the not so ideal beginning to her story, Dakota is now living the good life with her foster family in sunny San Diego. In a few short weeks since her arrival, Dakota has realized that she is safe now and has blossomed into a happy and goofy puppy. She loves to play with chewy toys like Kong and Nylabone. At other times, she enjoys a good game with her favorite ball. She likes to exercise her abundant puppy energy by playing in the yard and going on leash walks in the neighborhood. Missing one of her legs (we are not sure how that happened, as she came to TRD as a tripod) does not seem to slow this girl down at all! Dakota has endless energy--she will be a good fit for an active family who can take her on leashed walks and runs everyday. In the long run, Dakota has the potential to be a great hiking partner. According to her foster mom, she is a total people pleaser, which makes her an easy puppy to train and to teach tricks. She is also very smart (a little too smart at times) and picks up training quickly. She has already picked up basic commands like Sit, Down, Shake, and Name Recall. With her overcharged puppy brain, she sometimes forgets her training lessons and needs continual reinforcement. Her adopters will be expected to continue her training to turn this puppy into an outstanding member of the doggo community. Dakota is fully crate trained and house trained. She is working on some dog reactivity. She sometimes doesn't understand other dogs' play postures, and she needs slow introductions to new dogs, but she does live with two dogs so it is definitely possible to integrate Dakota into a pack with proper introductions. She has been great with kids and adults that she meets. When she first moved in with her foster family, she occassionaly chewed on inappropriate things around the house, but she has shown great improvement with this and now almost always chooses appropriate toys to chew on, which is a testament to her highly trainable nature. Overall, Dakota is a sweet dog who will definitely bring a ton of happiness along with a a few teaspoons of energy and adventure into your home. Her days has an abandoned puppy are long behind her and she is ready to be with her furever family. If you would like to meet Dakota, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Ed, at 3.5 years old and 35 lbs, is a high-energy, fun loving border collie mix. Ed joined The Rescued Dog back in 2014, as a 6 month old pup, after being rescued with his family from a high-kill-shelter. He was soon adopted, but unfortunately returned 2 years later when his family separated. Ed is finally ready to find his FOREVER home. Like most border collies, Ed has a high play-drive and is a focused retriever. His favorite three words are, "Find your ball!". The phrase will send Ed off on a scavenger hunt until he returns with a ball, or two to play with. Ed, being part border collie, would excel at agility, flyball, freestyle, or frisbee. As expected, Ed is smart as a whip and loves to be rewarded with toys after training. Ed loves learning new tricks and one of his favorite tricks is jumping from the floor into his handler's arms! While he has lots of energy, Ed likes to stick close to his person and returns with just a call of his name. He is good with people when properly introduced and gets along well with the other household dogs. Ed would prefer a quiet home (not too many people coming in and out) or maybe a home with land to work. Ed is a VERY high energy pup, he will do best in an active home, with frequent trips to fiesta island, dog parks, or with a running/hiking partner. Just as he needs physical exercise, Ed needs mental stimulation too! Ed will do best in a home with breed knowledge, or with someone looking for a sport dog. If you are looking for an active pup ready for a home of his own, please visit TRD's website and fill out an adoption application today to meet Ed! www.therescueddog.org show less

Introducing Jaime, a cuddly and lazy human trapped in the body of a dog rescued by TRD from the Imperial County Shelter in September 2017. Jaime is full grown at 2 years of age and weighs about 11 pounds. She is a tripod, with one of her front legs missing (from an unknown accident), but don't worry--Jaime more than makes up for it with her spunky attitude! According to her foster mom, Jaime truly is the sweetest pup ever. She has very mild personality and loves to snuggle. Like most Shih Tzus, Jaime's idea of exercise is stretching out and napping on soft places like blankets, a comforter, a pile of clothes on the ground, a cushion, a dog bed--basically anywhere soft and fluffy. Suntanning is another form of exercise Jaime likes to indulge in. In her "down" time, Jaime likes to chew on bully sticks and bones. She's not much of a walker; she just strolls and sniffs around at her own pace in the park or backyard. Running around wildly and romping is for common dogs (sniff). Jaime is too exquisite and special to do any of that. However, every once in a while, she decides to be a dog and likes to play catch with her humans around the house (obviously, at Shih Tzu speed). Jaime has been observed to have poor sight and hearing but she loves to cuddle on the sofa and engage in long, thoughtful conversations with her foster mom. She listens very attentively when you speak loudly enough. In her foster home, Jaime has been great with the adults and kids. She is completely house trained. Jamie also understands some basic commands like "Sit" and name recall. Although walking is not her favorite activity, Jaime is surprisingly great on the leash. Jamie is a charming little doggo-- perfect for anyone looking to adopt a part dog, part confidante, and a complete cuddle bug. If you would like to meet Jaime, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less

Looking for a sugary Christmas Cookie to sweeten up your life this holiday season? Meet TRD's latest recruit Cookie, who came to TRD from the Imperial County Shelter at a tender age of 4 months. Cookie is likely the sweetest and most affectionate puppy you will ever meet! Cookie is a Frenchie, Pug, and Chihuahua Mix who currently weighs under 10 pounds and should be under 25 pounds full grown. According to her foster mom, Cookie is a loving and fearless dog with tons of personality. She loves meeting dogs of all sizes. She also loves all people and is extremely friendly. Despite her small size, this puppy can blend into a pack of large dogs like she belongs with them. Her best features are her floppy ears and an underbite that will melt your heart. Although Cookie is still a puppy, within a few weeks in her foster home, she has picked up crate training. She loves her crate and sleeps in her crate every night. She is also working on her house training skills and almost has them mastered. On the leash, for her distracted puppy age, Cookie is remarkably good. She walks calmly and although she does get excited to see dogs, she waits and obeys her foster mom's commands. Cookie loves going on walks daily to burn through her puppy energy. She also likes to romp and run around the backyard with her canine foster brother. After playtime, Cookie likes to rest by cuddling with her foster mom. Overall, this cuddle bug will be a wonderful addition to any family looking for a puppy to add to their pack. Cookie has already sent her letter to Santa and her only wish is to be in her forever home on Christmas morning. If you would like to meet Cookie and make her wish come true, please fill out an adoption application on the TRD website and an adoption coordinator will be in touch to schedule a meet and greet. show less
