Our adorable boxer-mastiff mix Bacon and his equally lovable brother Eggs were nabbed by The Rescued Dog in San Bernardino--their "owner" tried to sell them and their littermates in the parking lot of the San Bernardino pound before turning them in. The owner managed to sell Bacon's and Egg's siblings but our poor little bite-sized nom noms were left behind. We scooped them up and brought these two darlings to San Diego. When TRD got them back home, we discovered that they both had hematomas in their ears, probably from shaking them because of infections or irritations. Even with these painful conditions, Bacon and Eggs bounced back with a little TLC in true puppy form. They have been silly and rambunctious from day one. Their infections have totally cleared up and they are healthy and happy little guys! Spunky and fun, Bacon has been stealing hearts left and right. He is both athletic and affectionate, and love other dogs and every person he meets. At six months old as of December 2014, Bacon is at a great age to start puppy classes and basic training. Bacon is very smart and has taken to crate training very well. He has also caught on to some basic training and would love to continue learning with their forever families. Bacon is a boxer-mastiff mix and he weighs around 40 pounds at 6 months. We estimate that Bacon could weigh as much as 80 pounds full grown. Are you looking for a fun and affectionate companion to join your family? In early September, The Rescued Dog got a desperate call from a contact at East Valley Animal Shelter in LA County. Someone had turned in a litter of 7-week-old cattle dog mix puppies, and the runt of the litter was badly injured. It appeared that another dog had attacked him, severely damaging in right eye and face. The shelter was going to euthanize him due to the extent of his injuries unless a rescue would step up and take him in. Needless to say, The Rescued Dog agreed to take the puppy and transported him to San Diego immediately for emergency care. The amazing team at San Carlos Animal Hospital agreed to nurse the puppy, who we named Odin, back to health, an effort more extensive than we realized when we saved him. Odin's right eye could not be saved and was surgically removed. His facial injuries had become infected and needed treatment and monitoring. Odin was in rough shape. Thankfully, Odin's outstanding care and his puppy spirit pulled him through. After over a week in residence at SCAH, Odin was strong enough to venture out to his foster home. He settled in to his new surroundings and, in true puppy fashion, bounced back quickly. Today, he is a typical rambunctious, fun-loving puppy with ears that could catch signals from space! Odin is loving and smart, and appears to have erased any memory of his rough start from his mind. As Odin continues to grow, it appears that he may be mix with a larger breed dog. His paws are pretty big! We estimate that Odin may grow to be in the 50-to-70 pound range. Odin is already taking well to basic training, and is looking for a home that will continue to let him "live the dream". We are going to be picky for this guy! He has stolen all of our hearts and we think he deserves the best. If you are interested in adopting Odin, please visit our website and fill out an application at http://therescueddog.org/available-dogs/dog-adoption-application/ show less

With darling adolescent boy Mickey, it’s all about the fun - and the snuggling! The 26 lb. beagle/border collie mix (best guess) is 8-10 months old and won’t get much larger - a great medium-sized, short-haired, good-natured dog buddy. He is currently being fostered with a family that includes a boy and a girl, 8 and 10 years old (whom he follows around like siblings), and a larger dog. He has been curious towards other dogs he’s met on walks, but his foster family hasn't seen a bit of aggression in this happy pup. Mickey likes long leash walks, going for jogs and runs, and just playing in the backyard or house. Mickey also loves the game of fetch, tirelessly retrieving the ball to have it thrown again. No worries if you are too tired to play, though. Mickey loves every type of dog toy and will toss a ball for himself to keep himself entertained. Once he’s tired out, he will wiggle in just as close to his person as possible and calm down for a good cuddle-session. Now that he has been rescued, Mickey is having the chance to use his sharp mind to learn commands. He has “sit” down perfectly, and is learning “stay”, recall, leash manners, not to nip or “mouth”, and how to let his owners know when he needs to go out. He’s almost fully house trained. His foster mom says Mickey is learning quickly and is very responsive to correction. He is crate-trained, and sleeps through the night well. He also enjoys car rides if you like a dog companion for your adventures. Until he has grown out of his puppy stage and has learned more of what behaviors are permissible to his family, he should, obviously, be supervised around very young children. Otherwise, he’s a good fit for a family or person willing to teach him and provide him the active lifestyle he enjoys so much. To meet Mickey, please fill out an adoption application at: show less

Meet Bjorn aka Baby Big Paws! Bjorn is the epitome of just how resilient dogs are. We rescued Bjorn from San Bernardino City shelter and were sadden to see the poor condition he was in. Bjorn was malnourished, had an upper respiratory infection, a broken tail, and what appeared to be cigarette burns on his back. His foster parents nursed him back to health and after having his tail amputated, Bjorn is ready for adoption! At 7 months old, this shepherd/Rottweiler mix is one big puppy! Bjorn will likely top out at 70-80lbs at maturity. Everywhere Bjorn goes, he gets complimented on his unique looks: underbite, downy coat, docked tail (for medical reasons), and giant paws! Bjorn is well socialized with young children and other dogs of all sizes, currently living with a 6 pound terrier. Bjorn is crate trained and house trained and doing well with basic commands. Bjorn knows "sit", "shake", "down", and even won a "spin" contest at PetsMart. He's quickly learning the intricacies of "fetch and he is mellow guy who enjoys long car rides so he can get an extra nap in. Bjorn is a bit of a couch potato who seems to like to watch TV and grumble like a bear whenever a dog comes on TV. The nature and characteristics of Rottweilers and Shepherds, makes Bjorn a natural family pup. To meet Bjorn, please fill out an adoption application at www.TheRescuedDog.org: show less

Are you looking for a well socialized puppy? Then, Sebastian is the guy for you! This little chihuahua mix and his siblings were rescued from a high kill shelter when they were only two weeks old. The original owners were over their city dog limit and were forced to surrender the chihuahua family. Sebastian and his siblings were placed in a wonderful foster home where they were well socialized with people, and especially kids. The neighborhood kids came over daily to visit and play with the puppies. At 4 months old, Sebastian is just under of 8 lbs and we expect him to be under 20lbs at maturity - the perfect size for any home. Sebastian is the largest of the litter and of course, one of Sebastian’s favorite activities is eating! The foster parents have nicknamed him “Bashful Bash,” an endearing name for just how sweet and cuddly this boy is. Sebastian is a very mellow natured pup who loves to be held in your arms and at your side. He has a delightfully sweet temperament, adores playing with the neighborhood children and dogs of all sizes and everyone who meets him comments about his kind nature. Bash is already crate and potty trained, he knows "sit" and "dance" and would be a wonderful apartment pup as he does not bark too much. Bash has been to fiesta island and dog parks and loves running around with all of the dogs but he keeps close to his human. We think Sebastian would make a perfect family dog and will settle into your loving family easily Sebastian's siblings and mother have been adopted and this sweet boy is patiently waiting for his forever home! Tiny Sophie could not possibly be more playful and happy. Her foster mom describes her as “quick, smart and full of energy”. Sophie is a short-haired blonde chihuahua mix, possibly part dachshund or corgi, who, at under 3 months, is the perfect age to start training and learning what her new family might want from her. Right now she’s only about 6 lbs. and we expect she probably will top out at no more than about 15 lbs. Sophie delights in going for long walks on leash, and is curious about all she encounters. At home, she loves her toys, and will play fetch with her favorite rope toy for as long as her foster mom will keep the game up. Nobody around for fun? Sometimes she tires herself out just doing figure eights around the apartment. This imaginative little girl even creates her own obstacle courses around furniture and pillows that she uses to practice her racing skills. Could she be timing her personal best? As playful as Sophie can be, she calms down and then is such a cuddler! She loves snuggling and burrowing under the blankets in bed. She will nestle up by your neck and smother you in puppy kisses. Sophie looks right into your eyes when you speak to her, and is starting to learn commands. Right now she’s especially good at recall; her foster mom says she comes running right back to her when she says “Sophie, want a treat?” She is house trained, sleeps in her crate happily all night, and has been good meeting new people. We aren't certain of how this handsome young man was found as a stray in San Bernardino, but when we saw him, we did know we had to make sure this special guy found a wonderful home. Cosmo is a two-year-old with a love of joining his people on an adventure. While he enjoys giving kisses, & playing with his foster parents and their dog at home, he really perks up going for his two daily walks or happily riding in the car - where he hopes he'll arrive someplace he can meet new people and dogs, like the dog park, Fiesta island or taking a hike. He has behaved very well meeting new people, children and dogs of all sizes. The gentle, quiet, and sometimes goofy Cosmo is a low-shedding white wheaten terrier mix who should end up weighing between 35-40 lbs. He came from a shelter quite underweight, but is in good health now that he gets regular meals, lots of love and plenty of adventures. Cosmo was a quite underweight when found as a stray but his foster mom says that he has clearly lived in a home before and was loved at some point as he has wonderful manners and is almost completely house trained. Cosmo would be happy to watch TV with you on the couch he loves to be snuggled and especially likes to be picked up like a baby - seriously, it's really cute, and we think that once he’s at full weight he’ll make a good jogging buddy, too. Cosmo just may be the perfect companion for you. Fill out an Adoption application on our website at www.theRescuedDog.org and get a chance to meet this young fella. show less

Our lovable Kimber, a cattle dog/heeler mix, has been described as “awesome - engaging, endearing, kind and smart” and this young lady needs a break. At just a year and a half, Kimber was rescued from a shelter with two of her 9-month-old pups, both who turned out to have inherited their mom’s playful, lovable nature. Now Kimber needs a home where she can receive some of the attention and care she provided her young ones. Kimber is house and crate trained and has been quick to learn from her foster dad. He says she is so intuitive that she already understands which couch is OK to jump on and which one is for humans only. He says she has especially impressed him with how easily she adapts to any situation without a hint of stress or anxiety. This 30-lb. short-haired sweetheart gets along well with adults and kids as well as other dogs. Since her rescue, Kimber has been allowed to spend time with many different pooches at a doggy day care, and quickly learned good mealtime manners when being fed around other dogs. Various people on staff there give her leashed walks and on those she has proven to be attentive and easy going. She really loves petting and attention, and her happy disposition is infectious. She can get excited, but calms down easily, and has plenty of energy to accompany her new family on walks, hikes or running adventures. Can you provide Kimber with the kind of home she so needs? Young miss Lucy, at 9 months old, is finally getting to relax and enjoy life after being rescued with her brother and mom from a high-kill shelter. In her foster home, where she is happy to cuddle with their 5-year-old little boy and play with her foster doggie brother, Lucy is putting her past behind her. As her rescuers and foster mom all note, Lucy has the heart of a lion - but now has shown she has the soul of a frolicking lamb. While in the shelter this pup took on the role of guarding their pen to protect her brother and mom with growls at people who she was worried would harm them. That brave, bluffing behavior is in her past now. She has blossomed into a gentle, loving girl and is enjoying her puppyhood with the weight of that duty lifted. Lucy, a border collie/cattle dog mix, with large alert ears and a short black and white-dappled coat, is currently about 19 lbs. and should grow up to be around 22-25 lbs. She is house trained and has behaved well on both leashed and unleashed walks. While she has lots of energy, Lucy likes to stick close to her person and returns with just a call of her name. She is good with people and gets along well with the other household dogs and cat where she is living. Lucy’s sweet nature is definitely displayed when kids come over to play at her foster home. She lets little boys and girls tussle with her, take toys from her mouth, lift her up and has never shown anything but a tolerant, fun-loving nature playing with them all. Lucy can sleep on her own bed now, but the lucky girl lately enjoys sleeping on the bed snuggled next to her foster mom at night. Maybe she can get her own home to snuggle in with you? Our little Wallace seems to get a smile from every person who sees his ever-wagging tail, happy-to-meetcha greeting, and the obvious intelligent curiosity in his dark, almond-shaped eyes. Wallace is a rust-colored Cairn terrier mix - low shedding - who loves to play and go on daily walks. That can be with his person, family or other dogs, such as the two he is currently living with and just adores. Wallace is also imaginative and self-confident and can entertain himself at home with any doggy toy. His foster mom says she laughs watching this cutie as he throws his toys in the air. Just about a year old, Wallace is as silly as a puppy, but he's full grown, so he will always be a little guy at only about 10 lbs. That makes him easy to travel with, and he's a great companion on outings. He has behaved beautifully in a grocery cart seat at Home Goods and dining out at a dog-friendly restaurant. He's calm and happy when you pick him up so it's simple to give him all the snuggles, baby hugs and belly rubs he enjoys. His foster mom says loves to be your shadow around the house, and nestles calmly into your lap for couch or bed-time lovin'. Wallace is house and crate trained, and is a pretty quiet guy. He uses a doggy door where he's living now, lets his parent know when he has to go do his business, and sleeps the night through in his crate without a peep. He's smart and intuitive, and has already learned the sit, come and off commands. He will need your help in training him to curb his curious nature so he learns not to take and inspect the interesting things you have. He and his brother were both rescues from a high-kill shelter, and we are baffled why the two were on the last chance list. Now Wallace needs some person or family to keep entertained and to share his abundant love. He might just melt your heart. To meet Wallace, fill out an adoption application today at show less

Our unique and beautiful Piper was on her last day at San Bernardino County when we pulled her. It is unfathomable to us that she was passed by. Piper was named after the planes, for her propeller-shaped ears. They aren't quite husky ears, and not quite shepherd ears. They are cute though! Her real charm lies in her personality and her gentle demeanor though. Piper is an old soul--she is only 1 year old, but she has a certain calm and regalness about her that will only get better with age. She's not totally serious though--she has a little twinkle in her beautiful blues eyes that let you know she has a little fun, mischief, and smarts mixed in there too. Piper is lithe and sporty, and loves a good long walk. She would be a great companion for hikes, runs, and walks. She will enjoy following any sort of activity with a quiet moment at home. She is very people oriented, and will pretty much just enjoy being wherever her people are. She is also very smart and learns quickly. Training with Piper will be easy and fun. Piper gets along well with other dogs, and is housetrained. She is crate trained too, but prefers to be close to her humans for sleep time. She is a stealth snuggler, and has been caught sneaking into the beds of her human foster siblings around bedtime. She is great in the house, and also gets along great with children. She would do well as either a second dog in the home or an only dog, as long as she gets some love and attention from her humans. Piper is full grown at a lean and lanky 40-45 pounds. (She could probably gain a few more pounds, but she will not get any taller.) Are you looking for a mellow, lovely friend to accompany you on your life adventures? Smart, friendly, and active only begin to describe our dreamboat Falcon! Falcon is approximately 8 months old and should grow up to be about 40lbs. This stunning cattle dog/border collie mix has all the brains associated with his heritage, and all the energy! Falcon came to us from a shelter in the San Bernardino area where he was picked up as a stray with his sister (who was rescued by another group). When we got him, he was covered in ticks and had recently been sprayed by a skunk. As our vet tech said, he must have had quite an adventure! Falcon gets along great with everyone he meets including dogs and children. When he meets new people he can hardly contain himself and is quick to roll over for belly rubs. He also loves to snuggle on the couch with his foster family after a nice walk. Falcon plays nicely with other dogs and is great at settling down in the house. Falcon is working on crate training, basic obedience, and walking nicely on a leash. He's also learning to ask to be let out to potty and (knock on wood!) hasn't had any accidents in the house. By all accounts he's a model citizen who's just lacking in some basic manners, much like any puppy! If you're looking for a spunky, quick learning, affectionate and active dog, Falcon is for you! show less

Are you looking for a happy and easy-going friend to join you on walks, runs, and hikes? Meet Marty, our sweet and social shepherd mix. Marty came to us from Moreno Valley, where he was at risk for euthanasia. It's possible that Marty's calm, somewhat shy demeanor worked against him in the shelter environment. He doesn't cause a fuss and is so low maintenance that he probably didn't grab much attention there. He's got our attention now though! Marty is an exceptionally handsome young pup, with a beautiful brindle short coat and kind eyes - we aren't certain of his primary breed, but its either shepherd or a Carolina dingo. Marty has a charming way about him, energetic, spirited, motivated to please, with an optimistic nature. An interesting note, we haven't seen or heard him bark, but he has the sweetest singing vocal sounds he makes when he's happy and excited. This sweet boy has come out of his shell and it turns out he is a great companion dog who lives with other dogs currently, he is potty and crate trained, know basic commands, is non-aggressive and loves to play with toys. Talk about perfect! Marty is great on the leash (it's easy to forget he's there because he's so undemanding!) and very non-reactive to other dogs when he's out and about. He's fun to bring to the park or the beach and has great recall. Marty is a little over 1 year old as of October 2014, which is a great age to reinforce the training he has and teach him some new tricks; with his cattle-dog traits, he is a fast learner and very observant. Marty is full grown at about 35 pounds. Hero and her ~2 week old litter came to us from San Bernardino City Animal Control. The original owners were over their city dog limit and were forced to surrender the chihuahua family. Unfortunately, the original owners did not leave the mother’s name, age, or even the date when the puppies were born. Having been surrendered to a kill shelter with teeny tiny babies to care for, we could only come up for one name for our chihuahua mother, Hero and a Hero she has been! For the past 7 weeks, the Hero family has been well socialized with people, especially kids. The neighborhood kids come over daily to visit and play with the puppies. At 12 weeks old, the puppies range between 2-5 lbs and we expect these chihuahua/beagle mixes (best guess) to end up at no more than 20lbs, the perfect size for any home! Momma Hero is smart, playful. and very friendly, giving these pups a great role model as they grow. While each pup has it's own distinct personality, the whole litter is curious, friendly, sweet and ADORABLE! All puppies are spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped - their adoption fee is $350. Beatrice is one unique girl with her brindle coat, adorable head shape, and light green eyes, an all around show stopper! Everyone asks what we think Beatrice is mixed with, and we just can’t tell right now! Her foster family states that Beatrice is smart, fearless, and has been the first puppy to do everything. Beatrice was the first to transition to puppy food, play with toys, adventure outside on her own, etc. Bruiser Bea, as her foster family has nicknamed her, isn’t afraid to wrestle with her brothers or get dirty. Sweet Bea would be an easy addition to your family, she is coming along in her potty training and is not a big barker. She loves all dogs, big and small and can happily romp around and play with most anything she can find. This little tom girl also has a sweet side to round out her character.
