When Kelpie came to us from San Bernardino, we had no idea that he had parvo. It was touch and go for Kelpie for a while there--he was very sick and we were not sure he was going to pull through. Thanks to the careful work of the staff at San Carlos Animal Hospital and the care of his foster family, Kelpie made a slow but steady comeback and is now happy, healthy, and ready for his forever home. His foster family barely knew him before he fell ill and affectionately listed his name as "Kelpie" on the emergency vet form in honor of his breed - Australian Kelpie mix. After a week in the animal hospital, his nickname stuck and Kelpie was here to stay! Kelpie is a fun and active dude who loves toys and a good game of fetch. He also has learned to run alongside a bike, which has been a great way to drain his energy. In addition, he has a lot of his basic skills mastered, including sit, stay, recall, fetch, and heel. Kelpie is also crate trained and house trained. Kelpie currently lives with other dogs and is great in the home and off leash, however he can be protective of his human family when out on the town. Kelpie's foster family has been working diligently to break him of this instinct with great results, and Kelpie's adopters will need to do the same to help him grow into the dreamboat he wants to be. Kelpie comes with a free training session from our team trainer to help his adopter acclimate him to a new home and lifestyle. Kelpie is a great size at about 35 pounds, and at just 1 year old, he has a lifetime of love and fun to share with his forever family. An active lifestyle with older kids would best suit Kelpie's needs. If you'd like to meet Kelpie, please fill out an application on our website. show less

If we had one word to sum up Vali, that word would have to be "sweet"!! Valentina came to us after one of those heartbreaking stories of a military mom being re-stationed and unable to take her pets. With her move being sudden and without any other options, we had to step in to help! As a petite 13 inch Beagle weighing in at 19 1/2 lbs, Vali is small in stature but huge in heart! She is one big bundle of love. True to her Beagle nature, she is happy, lovable and loyal. Vali is 8-9 years old which we think is a HUGE plus - the upside to a mature dog?? To name just a few: she's housebroken, mellow, good mannered and requires less exercise than her younger Beagle counterparts. Her foster family says she has bonded quickly with her humans following them around everywhere. She loves heading out around town with them and is friendly to all humans and dogs she’s met. Her hound genes continue to shine as she loves somewhat pokey walks so she can use that Beagle nose and enjoy all the scents she takes so seriously! She’s always ready for an outing, in the same way she’s always ready for a nap! We're pretty sure Vali would prefer a mellow home with someone available to be around most of the time. She's outgrown any real "dog play" preferring to snuggle, cuddle, sniff and just look stinking cute! Vali came from a home with another dog and cats and we know she prefers not to be alone; whether it be with animal siblings or her human who can be around most of the time. It's clear she takes her loyalty seriously as she’s happiest when with her people. Vali passed her general health check up with flying colors so we anticipate her making someone very happy for a long time. This is Tleyo, is short for Tleyotl which is a name derived from an old Nahuatl Aztec language meaning "Heart of Fire." Tleyo is very handsome 3 year old retriever mixed maybe with Aussie shepherd, weighs in at 55 lbs, about 3 feet tall and house trained. He was found abandoned at a children's orphanage in Tijuana, where the Director there decided he would be a wonderful mascot. Tleyo quickly came to be beloved by the children there because he is an active, high-energy and playful pup who, like them, was in need of a home. Tleyo is extremely intelligent and capable, he has learned how to open doors, he does a few tricks and seems to enjoy figuring things out. He is not at all stubborn and very eager to please, and he is a very obediant pup who is non aggressive or challenging of people but he can be a bit mischievous when nobody is looking, like jump up on the couch for a quick nap, on on the bed time. Tleyo loves to be with his people and is always looking for love. He gets along very well with other dogs of all sizes, loves kids and is an all around wonderful family pup. Tleyo warms up very quickly to new people, and can can get a little nervous in new indoor settings, but gets over it pretty quickly with just a little reassurance. Tleyo loves spending time outdoors and has been known to dig a bit to make himself a comfy bed outside. Tleyo has been with his buddy Kody for the past 2 years living in a home and while they do not need to be adopted together, they are a great pair. Both Tleyo and Kody are up to date on their vaccinations, neutered, house trained and ready to leave the orphanage and live in a home of his own. show less

When TRD rescued Tonks from the Imperial County Humane Society, she was very sick and very pregnant. A few days after arriving in San Diego, Tonks gave birth to 7--yes 7!--happy and healthy puppies, fondly known as the Harry Potter puppies. Tonks has been an outstanding mom to her puppies, in spite of having intestinal distress and other issues throughout the time she nursed her litter. We are happy to report that Tonks is fully on the mend, finally healthy herself, and ready to retire from motherhood and start a new life with her forever family. Tonks is very people oriented, and is content to follow her people around. She is not especially toy-motivated. She is mellow and sweet in her foster home, and a perfect lady on leash when she is out and about. Tonks is pretty low-maintenance. She just needs a nice regular walk and an occasional groom (and of course lots of love) to look and feel her best. Tonks is crate trained and house trained. At approximately 2 years old as of February 2015, Tonks is a great age to begin her life with her forever family. And at about 13 pounds, Tonks is a great size for most living situations. Are you looking for a lovely, mellow companion to keep you company and warm your heart? Fill out an application to meet Tonks! show less

Kody is the short name for Kodiak because he looked like a little Kodiak cup when he was born. Kody is a very handsome smaller sized shepherd mix (maybe with a little chow) who is known to be sweet, affectionate and a little on the mellower side. Kody loves to give kisses, cuddled and just to be close to people and can be a little shy around new people but warms up quickly and wins hearts where ever he goes. Kody gets along really well with people, and loves playing with other dogs, especially the smaller ones and really enjoys being gentle with them. Kody grew up near lots of smaller children and would do very well in a home with kids of all ages, as he is very gentle, obedient and likes to please his humans. Kody is a great companion to have at the beach or pool but wont get in too far. Kody was raised along with his brother Tleyo in a group home for children in Mexico, and has always been around children and is very sweet and tolerant with them. Kody and his brother Tleyo are both available for adoption and would be a great pair together but can be adopted separately. Their owner is being transferred for his continued work with the group home and cannot take them along with them. Kody is house trained, knows several command and is up to date on vaccinations, neutered. If you would like to meet him, please visit the website and complete an application and we will get you set up to meet this handsome young man. show less

Duchess is a 1 year-old Chinese Crested girl whose personality is typical of the breed - playful and energetic, always wanting to please, happy with all people as well as any size or type of other canine. Duchess' foster mom, who has another Chinese Crested of her own, says she is true to the breed's reputation as a Velcro dog that will actually hug you around the neck and gently press her face against yours in complete devotion. She also has the unusual coat of the Chinese Crested, cute floppy hair on the face and paws, and a hairless body. Well, with a hairless body, these dogs should not be out in the sun without sunscreen, so her situation when rescued was heartbreaking. Poor little Duchess had been abandoned in the desert near Calexico and luckily, her experienced foster mom has been working carefully to bring her to full recovery from the sunburn on her delicate skin. Now almost completely healed, Duchess is one happy, busy little girl who learns well with positive reinforcement. She’s house trained and crate trained, does not bark in the home, complies when you tell her no or leave it, and has been continually learning new commands. She loves children and is great with the 12-year-old she is currently living with. She enjoys her daily leash walks and playing with others; she also makes everything she can a toy. She’s creative at entertaining herself independently, throwing her treasures - Kong's, balls, sticks, etc. - and running after them or rearranging them. Duchess loves being the center of attention and goes everywhere with her foster mom, enjoying all the new adventures. Her foster mom says Duchess is also known as the funniest dog at the dog park with her happy acceptance of all she meets and willingness to play any new game she finds herself in. This young lady will be the darling of any home where she will not be left alone for long periods of time. Duchess is gaining confidence however, she is still a bit skittish in new situations, and is probably not a good candidate for a house with cats, as she loves to chase them. At 13 lbs., Duchess is a bit larger, sturdier and bouncier than is typical for her breed, so she’ll fit in well with many types and sizes of families. If you’d like to meet this sweet pup, fill out an adoption application and we will set you up to meet. show less
