you are welcome to volunteer at more than one location!

Age Requirement Information

We welcome families to volunteer together at stores, events and such, however we do require those under 16 years of age must be accomponied by a parent/guardien that is over 18 years of age. The parent/ guardian is required to be the primary volunteer and actively doing the volunteer tasks if the minor is under 16 years of age..

Those that are 16 years of age and over can volunteer independently at cage cleaning volunteer shifts and events, but must have their own transportation and parent/ guardien's permission. Parent/ guardien must be present during the volunteer training or begining of the event to understand what is required of the young adult to do to volunteer.

Communication

Fostering

Foster families should provide:

A healthy and safe environment for the foster cats to thrive in. This means understanding and complying with cross-contamination prevention methods such as washing hands between interacting with personal cats and foster cats for the first 2 weeks of fostering.

Transportation to and from adoption events and vet appointments is preferred. Ability to transport in case of emergency is required.

Socialization and cuddle time to help teach the cats about positive family and pet relationships.

Exercise and positive stimulation as appropriate for different cats/kittens.

Grooming when necessary - trimming nails, brushing if tolerated, and bathing in some circumstances.

Attention to condition of stool, paw pads, ears, respiratory system, etc. to ensure full awareness of the health of the foster pet.

Secure and safe introductory/isolation room.

Ability to host ASHA check-ins to see the foster pet within 24 hours if necessary

Fostering can last from a few weeks to a year plus. You can also be a foster for only a set amount of time depending on your availability. We match your skills to the animal you foster, and provide equipment like litter boxes, bowls, and carriers. ASHA loves it when a fosters provide the basic supplies such as; litter, food, and toys for their foster animal, but we will provide all of the necessities if needed. ASHA covers all vet bills & medications, manages their online adoption profiles, and every animal is microchipped. We of course screen potential adopters before they meet your foster pet and potentially become their forever family.

Our cat foster program is designed to help kittens, adolescents, and adult cats alike get a second chance at finding a home — a chance they may not get at a shelter. Many of the cats who are with ASHA have come off the streets and in a loving foster home, every cat can get the individual attention he or she needs to build trust with humans and soon find a forever family.

Fostering can be a lot of work, but it is a very rewarding experience.

We will require animals of the same species to be kept separated by a solid door if above 4 months of age and not yet spayed/neutered.
Please also understand that we can not guarantee an animals health or disposition.
(Special needs can greatly vary from 3 legged or blind cats, to open wounds, or health disorders...)
We require most fosters to have a room with a solid door to ensure the animals have a proper 2 weeks introduction and isolation room. A place that is separated and closed off keeping the foster and any other animals separated and safe if/when needed. If you do not have any other animals a large metal cage (or soft play pen if younger kittens) is required and can be provided for use by ASHA.
If local to another volunteer, many times volunteers help one another out by caring for each other fosters as needed. Or when room is available, moving the foster animal temporarily to another foster.

More about you

Do you have any upcoming commitments when you wont be able to foster? Are you only available for a few weeks? The season, or a few months? Just over the holidays? Or just until the holidays? Or are you available and happy to help as much as you can as long as you can?!
Animals have required vet visits on occasionally that they will need to be transported to. In addition, Unfortunately we can't speak to any emergencies that may crop up and in such situations they would need to be taken to the ER vet ASAP.

If interested in fostering the following is required: About your home

We will need to see documentation of this to ensure the animal will not cause you legal issues or get evicted shortly after settling in. Please have your land lord or leasing office send us an email to verify you are allowed pets. Or proof in the form of a screen shot or picture of your leasing agreement, or the website information will work too. Please email to ASHAmaryland@gmail.com with your required documents.
