This very good boy was initially shy and a bit scared when he first arrived but he`s come out of his shell so much! Alpha is now confident and goofy and he LOVES adventure! Whether it be going on a hike at McKinney Falls State Park, or going swimming, or even just hopping in the car for some sightseeing – Alfalfa is your guy!Alfafa is not only curious and adventurous, he is also a smarty pants! He knows several commands (sit, down, and shake), and we`re pretty sure he`d love to learn a few more. Oh, and he is somewhat of a diva… that’s right, Alfafa loves it when you brush his hair. He’ll thank you by wagging his bushy tail and maybe even giving you a kiss or two!As a larger, black dog, Alfafa is often overlooked here. When you walk past his kennel, he`ll bark and jump, but all he`s trying to say is `pick me!`. And he doesn`t understand why nobody ever does pick him :( Alpha just needs someone to give him a chance, which is why we`re hoping to find him a foster home, so they can see the amazing dog he is without all the stress of being at the shelter. Oh, Alfie! His name is actually Alfred but we only call him that when he`s being naughty. Alfie is young and frustrated and smart... that is a recipe for naughty dog when you are living in the shelter! Alfie also isn`t the most confident doggo. But no worries, Alfie has a big circle of shelter friends and they are helping show him that people are good and the world isn`t so scary!Alfie enjoys taking his time on strolls, leaving no smell un-smelled. He also likes treats and puzzle toys. The car still makes him a little nervous so we`re taking baby steps with car rides but Alfie is getting braver and braver each time.Alfie takes direction nicely and would do well with a patient, savvy foster. He has shown friendly interest in other dogs, but he would definitely need some decompression time and then slow intros.Alfie is a bit handshy and while we don`t like to think of why that is, we do keep it in mind and make sure to go slowly and move very deliberately around him. This cute little shepherd mix is fairly out-of-sorts at the shelter and we`d love to get him into foster so he can catch up on his zzz`s and be the best doggie he can be. Alu has lived with children before, but it’s suggested that children in the home be steady on their feet.Alu is very house-trained. He uses a doggie door and is self-managing when left alone. Alu is described by his foster family as laid back and loving. Alu enjoys neighborhood walks and brief games of fetch with a ball or a toy, but mostly he just loves to be with his people. Apricot is a smart gal who thinks age is just a number. She really is the loveliest girl one could ask for. She`s outgoing and loves a good brisk walk around the park, but she also enjoys a good snuggle on the couch! Apricot may seem shy in her kennel, but once she gets to know you, she warms right up and becomes a whole different dog. She needs a home without any other pets or young kids, as she can be grumpy with them after long periods of time. Of course, that just means more attention for her from her future family! Apricot is a very loyal dog, who will love you with her whole heart soon after she gets to know you. Ash is a sweet, very easy going goofy boy with medium energy and loves to play with you or his siblings. Even though he’s a little guy, he’s quick to give a very big purr and loves the attention. He mostly plays with his four siblings (A801555, A801556, A801557, A801579) wrestling and right in the middle of it even though he was the runt of the litter. He loves chewing on mice, any string toys and enjoys hand wrestling as shown in the picture. Even though he’s still the smallest of his litter, he’s tough and plays hard, jumping into any wrestling match. He sleeps and plays with all of his sibs so you could mix and match if you’d like a pair.He purrs immediately when I talk to him sleeping on the cat tree and even more so when you pet him I pick him up. I pick him up even if he’s playing, to carry around and he’s find but may want down if he’s busy. He’ll play with my feet in my Birks while I sit and my desk and will come up and give a small chirp for attention to get in my lap if I don’t see him. He’ll stay if he asks for lap time but if his siblings are playing he might want to get down to join his brothers and sister. Most of the time, he’ll jump up to the back of the couch or a closer cat tree perch for attention if you walk by and he’s up.He has light soft voice and will chirp at to you for attention and on occasion will talk to you. He’s excellent on the litter box and is pretty easy to clip his nails when he’s sleepy. Even with his siblings to chase, he really tries to get my seven year old cat’s attention to play but is gentle and doesn’t jump on her. He can be a little shy around new people but warms up pretty quickly. This is Blue, and he is quite the whippersnapper! This youngin` has lots of smarts and energy which makes shelter life pretty darn difficult for him. Blue still tries his very best to be a very good boy every day!Blue loves the following: snacks, walkies, squeaky toys, peanut butter (yes, it`s a snack, but he wants to make sure everybody knows), and his friends of course! Blue has a rowdy play style so he can potentially live with another playful pup.Shelter life is tough on doggos. But it is especially tough on pups like Blue who need a more consistent outlet for their energy. We`d love for Blue to get scooped up by an active adopter. Lots have people have told me I`m a good girl and have used words like cute, beautiful, cuddly, calm, funny, sweet and easy (going) to describe me. People say I`m a sweet old girl who wants to snuggle and be loved on. I`m slow-paced, generally calm, and happy to lie around on soft things near good humans. I`m good at letting you know when I have to go potty, and I don`t mind being in a crate and am easy to walk on a leash. And when he`s not sniffing all the things, he is an awkward teenager trying to find his place in this crazy world. Don`t worry, Beluga, we’ve all been there! Biggs is a big personality in little body! He loves people and cuddling. He has sporadic bursts of energy to attack a stuffed toy or patrol the backyard, but in general he’s a low-key, go-with-the-flow guy. Biggs cuddles with his 55lb-foster sibling pit bull, ignores cats in his foster home, and he’s been well-behaved with children he’s met while on outings. Biggs’ favorite things include being your shadow and snuggling next to you on the couch. He will happily accept belly rubs on his terms. Biggs has done very well with potty training, but he does require regimented breaks for success. Bubba lived with the same family his whole life and is a little confused why he is at the shelter, but his gorgeous eyes and adorable personality have made him an instant volunteer favorite. Bubba *LOVES CHASE* and tug of war, and is endlessly entertaining. Bubba walks great on leash and is up for just about anything. His former owners said he’s “always happy!” and that his most challenging quality is that he loves giving kisses. We get it - he’s perfect! If you are looking for a fantastic family companion who can play with the kids in the backyard and then relax on the couch, Bubba is your guy! Meet Bubu! Boo is a great little guy and LOVES to play! If he is awake, he is on the go...always looking for someone or something to play with. I have two cats and he gets along great with both of them! He is not shy, so I suspect he would also easily become accustomed to having a dog friend. Bubu is super spunky and feisty, so he would make a great friend for another kitten or other playful friends! He does have a sweet side and although not a lap cat, he is a “leg” cat! he loves to crawl on top of your leg for a quick cat nap. Boo did have an eye injury as a baby, but it is all healed up now. As a result, his left eye vision is a little cloudy. But trust me, this doesn’t slow him down at all. His eye looks a little blue, so I like to think he looks like a super cool super hero kitten! Chance arrived as a stray and didn`t have the best start to shelter life when a catchpole was used to restrain him. Now that we know him better, we can only imagine what a terrifying experience that was for him. Chance is a big ole softie who can be pretty afraid of new things. For a long time he seemed fearful about the inside of his kennel. Cameras are also pretty scary for him. And he has shown some hand shyness which always breaks our hearts.But, Chance is slowly but surely coming out of his shell! We think he`s pretty young (just over a year old) so he likes to do all the puppy things once he feels comfortable. That includes being a little jumpy and mouthy but he is quickly learning that other activities are much more appropriate and just as much fun! Well, almost as much fun...Chance has gone on our monthly hike and decided that yes, he does like hiking very much, thank you. Charlie is a very sweet, very easy going boy with low to medium energy and extremely gentle. He’ll always give a big purr when I talk to him on the cat tree and pick him up. Most of the time he plays with his four siblings (A801555, A801556, A801557, A801578) chasing through the house, wrestling or toys if everyone else is asleep. He loves hand or foot wrestling and goes apey for mice and especially string or dangly toys. He’s lightly bonded with a couple, sleeping with them more but plays and sleeps with all of them so you could mix and match if you’d like a pair.He purrs immediately as I often talk to all of them on the cat tree when they’re asleep and wake them up for pets after talking to them. I pick him up, even if he’s playing, to carry around and he’s find with it but may want down to play if he’s busy with kitten stuff and the same goes for laps. Lately he’s really opening up, coming over and chirping to be picked up and held while I’m sitting at my desk and he’ll stay when he asks for lap time. He’s becoming as social as his sister Ginger, running across the room when I get his attention for some lap time.Lately he’s starting to talk and has medium soft voice when he chirps for attention and will sometimes meow and even talk a little when asking for attention. He excellent on the litter box and is pretty easy to clip his nails when he’s sleepy. He mostly ignores my seven year old cat but will occasionally swat at her to play or chase her tail. Cheeto is an easy going boy with medium energy and extremely gentle when you play with him even if you try and wind him up. He has a big purr and will do so immediately. He’s an explorer and starting to climb though the majority of the time he plays hard with his four siblings (A801555, A801556, A801578, A801579) wrestling and playing fast as you can chase. Like all his siblings, he likes chewing on them or on mice, jumps for string toys, leather cord and loves milk jug pull tabs. He sleeps and plays with all of them so you could mix and match if you’d like a pair.He gives a big purr quickly by just petting him or sometimes I just talk to him on the cat tree and can hear him. I pick him up often, even if he’s playing, to carry around but he’ll likely want down if he’s busy. In the past few days, he’s really warmed up that a lap is a good thing and will ask for attention. When he was younger he wanted attention but would stay at arm’s length. Now he’ll come over, sometimes from across the room and ask to be picked up and sit in my lap at my desk quite comfortably once he’s worn off some energy.When he was younger, he didn’t talk much at all but lately will give a strong chirp or two to be picked up and will talk with me if he’s on the cat tree, couch or at my feet sitting at my desk. He’s excellent with the litter box and is pretty easy to clip his nails when he’s sleepy. With his siblings to chase and wrestle with, he mostly ignores my seven year old cat but will occasionally swat at her to play or chase her tail. Chiquitin! His name means `tiny tot` in Spanish. We`re guessing he was the cutest little puppy ever but he is definitely more of a Big Tot these days! When Chiquitin arrived at the shelter, he was pretty shut down. This is normal, and heartbreaking, for many owner-surrendered pups. They have no idea what they did wrong, why they are in this loud place, where their family is, and are they ever coming back for them.This is where the power of AAC`s shy dog volunteers come in! They worked with Chiquitin daily, and little by little, he started to come out of his big fluffy shell. Now Chiquitin does the cutest dance when he sees his friends! He is the master of zoomies, and he loves to play with other pups. His roommates keep getting adopted and we`re hoping that Chiquitin`s turn is next! Large black dogs are the most overlooked dog in the shelter system. It is difficult to explain how much we love Cobalt, that adorable brindle nugget! He just oozes affection and love, preferring to snuggle with his volunteer friends every chance he gets. Cobalt has been at AAC before, and is understandably confused to be back. It`s been tough for him, and he`s turning into a long stay, but like so many of the dogs we work with, Cobalt shows amazing resilience. He`s a little guy who enjoys running in the yard, nom nom`ing all the treats, and doling out those sweet Cobalt kisses. He would greatly benefit from some consistency and structure. Being bounced around can`t be easy on such a young pup, and Cobalt promises to be the best boy he can be once he is scooped up! He had been attacked by two other dogs and as a result, had a pretty painful spinal injury. He was then adopted by someone who brought him back just a few months later because she was moving. He was adopted again, and this time stayed with that family for over 5 years. But when they decided to start a family, they returned Crush.Crush can potentially live with another dog, but it would need to be the right dog and with an adopter willing to take things slowly. He is super smart and loves treat puzzles. Okay, so he really just likes the treats in the puzzle, but he knows he has to solve the puzzle to get the treat so he gets to work right away! If the treat happens to be cheese, he gets to work even quicker!Toys are fun, especially the soft, squeaky ones! Car rides are exciting, and if you let him, Crush will nudge up to the front seat just far enough to give you some kisses. Hiking at the park is the best because there are so many smells and people and dogs and his whole face just lights up with curiosity!Crush is ready for some stability, with someone who understands he isn’t an object that can be returned if he doesn’t work perfectly all the time, or if there are some life changes. Ginger is a perky girl with medium, bouncy energy, the most social of her siblings and extremely gentle when you play with her. She’s very quick to give a purr pretty much anytime, even if you grab her playing and pick her up. It’s a big, strong purr for a little girl. She’s a social butterfly and will move to whatever part of the cat tree I’m at for extra pets and will come over for attention, walking straight up to be picked up, held or sit in my lap. Lately she’s begun to tap my ankle to be picked up in lieu of meowing and does both.She’s a bit of an explorer starting to climb and jump but the majority of the time he plays hard with his four brothers, not shying away from tackling any of them (A801555, A801557, A801578, A801579) wrestling, playing chase or chewing on any of their toys- string, mice, leather cord, etc., and jumps when you throw mice or string and trying to teach her to fetch. She sleeps and plays with them all so you could mix and match if you’d like a pair. She’s often aware and watches when I come into a room and can pick her up anytime, even if she’s playing, to carry around and she’ll just purr but may want down if she’s got things to do. She’s a little bouncy to sit still on a lap for long periods and will want to get down to play with her brothers until she’s worn some energy off. Once she’s played out, she’ll stay.She’s chirpy and talks for attention and sometimes I hear her talking in the house. She’s excellent in the litter box and is easy to clip her nails when she’s sleepy. With her siblings to chase, she mostly ignores my seven year old cat but still tries to get her to play or chase her tail. She can be a little shy around new people but warms up very quickly. Gino wants to make it known that he is not a fan of living at the shelter. He loves walking with his friends, playing with other rowdy pups, and checking out what is in the toy bin. That doesn’t stop me from being the sweetest, wiggliest, most adorable pup ever! I can see the outlines of objects and always know where the nearest treats are and my disability does not stop me one bit.Herman is a quintessential gentle giant. He is part toddler, part puppy, and part small dog all in one beautiful strong package. Jack is a very easy going boy with low to medium energy and extremely gentle when you play with him, tickling his belly, etc., where he’s very quick to give a big purr. He often plays with my shoes and he’ll roll over on his back easily so I can rub his belly with my foot when I’m working in the kitchen. He’s a little bit of an explorer and the majority of the time he plays hard with his four siblings (A801556, A801557, A801578, A801579) wrestling, playing chase, chewing on mice, string and other toys. He’s lightly bonded with a couple, sleeping with them more but plays and sleeps with all of them so you could mix and match if you’d like a pair.He gives a big purr immediately, even if I walk up to where he’s sleeping and just talk to him on the cat tree before petting him. I can pick him up, even if he’s playing, to carry around but he isn’t completely sold to sit still on a lap yet but he’s opening up to it every day when I pick him up and put him in my lap. In the past few days, he’s come up and asked for attention when I’m at my desk to be picked up after play time. When he’s worn off some of his kitten energy, he’ll sit next to my leg on the couch or stay in my lap at my desk. So far, he doesn’t talk much, only a slight soft chirp when he wants attention and he’ll often have to ask twice because it’s soft. He’s excellent with the litter box and is pretty easy to clip his nails when he’s sleepy. With his siblings to chase and wrestle with, he mostly ignores my seven year old cat but will occasionally swat at her to play or chase her tail. Jambalaya`s ideal day consists of napping by his human (which he will reward with loud purrs), and spending a lot of time playing with his cat toys and chasing his cat sister around the house (he is still a kitten and has a ton of energy). Speaking of his cat sister/playmate, Jambalaya ADORES other felines and would do best in a home with a second playful cat to help him exercise daily and keep him company. Another cool thing about Jambalaya is that he is a tripod cat! The details aren’t clear but there were some potential resource guarding issues and after an incident with the other dog, Kevin was returned to AAC 2 months later.Resource guarding is typically a very manageable behavior but you have to be diligent. We never recommend the availability of resources to all dogs in the household during the first several weeks, and after that, we recommend close monitoring to ensure that no doggo has decided that the resource is his/hers.Kevin is an affectionate and loving pup, but he is also pretty anxious, and the shelter environment only exacerbates his anxiety. We’d like to get him into a foster home and see if his anxiety decreases naturally (which it almost always does).Kevin has a long life ahead of him, and we want to make sure it is the happiest life possible for this sweet doggo! She is comfortable sleeping in most positions, and will actively seek out a blanket to wiggle under - she tucks herself in!-Loves her toys and LOVES to play tug. She might sound ferocious with her growling but she is most definitely loving every second, she`d probably play tug forever if you could hold on that long.- Good with other doggos! After a solid warm up and time to get to know each other, Lark loves to play and wrestle with other dogs! Leo is very house-trained, self-managing when left alone, very easy to walk on a leash, and loves going on car rides. Before going into foster, Leo went to play groups and was paired with another dog. His previous owner reported Leo is very good with children. He knows several commands, including sit, lay down, shake, other paw, and is learning to wait for his food before diving in. Leo’s foster mom says he’s an amazingly easy pup who will brush his body up against you like a cat and then flop down on the ground to roll over for belly rubs. After being adopted/fostered and returned several times, a foster decided to bring him home to figure out why things weren’t sticking. She read his notes and quickly learned this little guy has stranger danger! It seems people have always been scary for little Lew dog!With the help of an awesome local trainer, we learned how to do proper introductions! He loves his person and will look to them for guidance!Lewey would do best in a low traffic home without children. He has recently shown some dog reactivity but does great with his dog brother and goes to playgroups when he’s at the shelter. He’s cat friendly! These two handsome guys are so lovable! If you are looking for some laughs and snuggles, then you need to meet these two precious pups! They are always so excited to see their human friends and play together!Gomez was recently adopted on his own, and without his best bud Luther he was anxious in his new home. Luther was still at the shelter and scared. It took a week of coaxing from our best shy dog whisperers to get Luther to come out of his kennel. Gomez returned and was immediately paired up with Luther. They are now the HAPPIEST since they are back together! She has lived with other dogs her entire life and tends to hang near the crowd, but not in the middle of the crowd. She`s likes her own sleeping spot nearby. When it`s time for the good stuff like pets and treats, expect she`ll come with along with the rest of the canine crew. She`s quite ok near cats too. She`s healthy and enjoys simple living, a spot by the window or door and sometimes a breezy spot for a few minutes outside. Martie is such a smart and sweet girl. Once you have a connection with Martie, there’s no going back! Martie has shown to be social with dogs in the shelter and we would be happy to facilitate a meet and greet with any furry dog siblings. Martie loves a good snack, a nice head scratch, and a long run! This girl needs a break from the shelter. She was able to live in he behavior team office where she made tons of human friends and played with all the toys. Being at the shelter can be stressful for such an intelligent dog, and it definitely is for Martie girl. She displays her frustration by barking at visitors as they pass her kennel. Outside of the kennel, Martie is extremely affectionate and just wants some attention. Once Martie is able to get out of her stressful kennel she is one of the sweetest dogs you could meet! This girl needs a break from the shelter and a warm spot to land this holiday season. Can you be that warm spot? Maui! This boy is as fun as his name! He likes to roll over on his back and kick those long legs out. Oh, you have a treat in your hand? Perfect, you can feed me while I`m on my back, thanks!Maui has been bounced around a bit, and like all dogs, he is ready for a home to call his own. He has some sensitivities, but they are easily managed, and of course, he will go home with a training voucher.Maui likes to play fetch, and even though he`s a biggun, he`s got some agility moves, too! Once he`s romped around for a bit, then he`s ready for some snuggles. He is truly a gentle giant!Maui is resilient and does pretty well in the shelter, but we all know that it`s not a substitute for a real home. The bigger pups tend to be overlooked, and that`s too bad because Maui is such a good boy! A little more about adorable Puff (from her foster family):Puff and Fluff are sister and brother. Puff is an 8.5 week old female brown tabby kitten who has the biggest, most beautiful eyes. She is high-energy and loves to play. She starts purring when you pet her while she`s in her bed by the window, and loooooves playing with her toys. She`s an expert pouncer. She`s brave and curious and will scope out anything new before her brother Fluff gets the courage to do so. She is eating dry food already (not just wet kitten food) like a pro. She`s very tidy and cleans herself regularly. She`s great with middle schoolers and is snuggling with us on the couch already! Some of the dogs we work with have sad stories. Some stories we know are sad by looking in the dog’s eyes, seeing them flinch, physical scars. Some stories we know are sad from word-of-mouth or eyewitness accounts. And in cases like Rhonda, we know she had a sad story because she was found in the street, alone, unable to move. She was wearing a spiked collar so someone probably viewed her as a guard dog rather than a family member.Rhonda is all healed up now. She has been at the shelter since July and nobody from her past has come for her. That`s probably a good thing.Rhonda lets us know she is still afraid by sometimes showing her teeth, or barking, or stiffening. We respect her boundaries and move at her pace. And in return, Rhonda lets us know how grateful she is for the love and attention. As one of her shelter advocates has said, once you are Rhonda`s friend, you are golden.Rhonda may always have some stranger danger, and we don`t blame her. She needs someone willing to go slowly with her, who wants to give her all of the comforts she has probably never known before - a soft bed, a gentle touch, yummy treats just for her, and time to build trust.Rhonda has kept to herself when she goes to playgroup. She is tolerant of other dogs but doesn`t necessarily need to live with one. So perhaps you either have a pet-free home, or a non-pushy dog who`s content to simply share space with another dog.Let`s make the rest of Rhonda`s story a happy one, a loving one, a forever one.
