As sweet and wholesome as her name implies, Cookie is ready to be paired with a companion just as delightful as her. She's eager to get out the door and explore. Don't be surprised by her strength! Although she may pull a little here to there, we believe she would do well with a harness and a caregiver who is able to positively correct her leash manners. She's a smart gal, and we think a dedicated adopter will have her learning in no time. Cookie came to the San Antonio Humane Society as a transfer from Animal Care Services. We are happy to regularly partner with ACS to transfer homeless dogs into our shelter on a weekly basis. Our partnerships also include dozens of other shelters and rescue groups in our area. Transferring pets between shelters opens up space for more pets to be received and also helps hard-to-adopt pets find a new family in another community. The joint efforts of these collaborations and partnerships not only makes our community a more humane environment, but also saves hundreds of pets who might otherwise face euthanasia due to overcrowding. If you are interested in meeting Cookie, please speak with kennel staff.Adoption fee includes spay/neuter surgery, first set of vaccinations, microchip, de-wormer, flea and heartworm prevention, complimentary wellness exam (within 5 days of adoption) and complimentary follow-up care (within 14 days of adoption) at any VCA animal hospital , and 30 days 24PetWatch Pet Insurance. show less

In 2018, the SAHS conducted nearly 19,500 spay/neuter surgeries and we are projected to exceed that number by the end of this year. Not only does surgery reduce pet overpopulation, but pets who have not been spayed/neutered are at an increased risk of certain cancers and a decreased lifespan. Gertrude is living proof of this reality. She was transferred to the SAHS from the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) with large tumors on her underbelly. These large growths were mammary tumors and they are common in female dogs who have not been spayed. There were many obvious physical traits that showed she'd had multiple litters in her lifetime. Because she's a senior, and due to the size of the tumor, we had several concerns for Gertrude going into surgery. After two hours, the largest tumor was removed: a mass weighing in at over 3 lbs. Gertrude has since recovered from her surgeries, and she's ready to live out her golden years in an over loving and understanding home. All she wants and all she ever asks for is love, love, love.
