About Gordo

Adoption Fee: $300

Gordo is 11ish-years old, 20-pounds male mix breed rescued (along with about 30 other dogs) from a hoarder's apartment in the Bronx. For his entire life, he lived indoors with no sunlight or fresh air in a cramped one-bedroom apartment overflowing with other dogs. Despite these conditions, he is a sweet and gentle soul who loves his people and adores well-behaved children who are respectful to him. Gordo was very scared initially but has really blossomed now with proper care and nutrition. He is slightly cautious but is a trusting, loving boy.

For the first 11 years of his life, Gordo never ever went outside and is still learning to walk on a leash. Due to his lack of exposure to the outside world, he can only be considered for a home with a fenced-in yard, preferably outside of NYC. He will go outside to do his business 4-5 times a day and will need to wear a belly band indoors (Bonus: Gordo comes with his own washable belly bands, coats, sweaters, toys and bed) Sweet Gordo has come so far and is trying so hard. Just two months ago he was barely walking and now he is running around and jumping up on his hind legs and talking and being funny. Lots of talking, particularly when he wants attention! Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks???

He LOVES toys particularly his Lamby and can sometimes get possessive over them but only with other dogs (Who can blame him? He’d never had anything of his own when living with 30 other dogs!). Due to this, we would recommend that he either be placed in a home where he is an only dog, or with dogs that are bigger than him (as there is a chance he could bully smaller dogs). He is good with cats - and children!

Gordo has a minor heart murmur (vet says his heart is otherwise healthy), and cataracts (he sees well enough to get around), and mild arthritis in his hips. This esteemed senior has early-stage renal disease which has been improved with diet. He cannot be neutered due to his age (mostly because of his impaired kidney function). This is one really special wise old man with a story and a true rescue dog who is ready to bond with his forever family.

Bobbie is 2ish-years, 15-pound scruffy terrier mix surrendered to the Brooklyn shelter. He is high-energy! He attaches quickly to his one person, but can take a little while to warm up to groups. Outside, Bobbie is all business and considers it his solemn duty to lead you back home for some zoomies around the house, a pit stop at the pee pad, and then directly into a warm lap or a cozy blanket. Bobbie is a bit of a nervous walker when outside the home and could use some leash-training. Bobbie likes some dogs, especially smaller than him and low-energy - he likes to be in charge. He recently began playing with his neighbor's senior chihuahua! Bobbie loves toys and playing tug-of-war. He is very smart and a fast learner - he has already learned "sit," "shake," and "down."  We're looking for an experienced dog owner with a childless home for Bobbie as he displays territorial behavior (barking and rushing the door). He could benefit from lots and lots of exercise!  We think a backyard would be a huge benefit, as he loves to run! Vaccinated for bordatella, dhpp, rabies. Neutered and microchipped. Please contact us DIRECTLY using the instructions below if you are interested in fostering or adopting one of our Waggytails! Bryn is a 1.5ish-years, 13-pound female cairn terrier mix originally from TX. She LOVES being outside and running in her yard! Bryn is an absolute doll!  She has two distinct, yet adorable little personalities, one being very passive, quiet, and docile – rolling her back looking for a belly rub; the other being vibrant, and spunky - doing zoomies around the house looking to recruit playmates to join in the fun.  Bryn loves affection and being around her human, but is also okay taking time alone.  She LOVES being outside and would stay out all day if you let her, but is learning to walk on a leash. Bryn is housetrained and will cry at the door when she wants to go out.  She is also crate trained.  Bryn gets along really well with all of her foster siblings and would love being in a house with other dogs, but would also do well as an only dog, as long as she has plenty of attention, love, and belly rubs!   Received rabies and dhpp vaccines, heartworm negative. Needs spay and will be microchipped. Please contact us DIRECTLY using the instructions below if you are interested in adopting one of our Waggytails! Lucas is a 11ish-months, 7-pound male maltese/terrier mix originally from TX. There’s much to love about little Lucas. He is a quiet, happy, and friendly pup that gets along well with people and other dogs. Outside, he is so popular, and loves to meet and run around with other dogs (even the big ones) at the dog park. Inside, he will busy himself with soft plush toys, or lay quietly in his crate. Lucas is easy-going, curious, and eager to please. A harness is a must for Lucas due to his size, and while he’s learning to walk well on it, he can use continued practice. Every once in a while, though certainly not often, Lucas can guard his food or a toy, and while it has never escalated beyond a bit of growling, a home without small children is recommended. Lucas has been doing well with potty-training and has not had any accidents in the house. Overall, he is a great little boy! Received rabies, bordetella, lepto, and dhpp vaccines. Microchipped, neutered, heartworm negative. Please contact us DIRECTLY using the instructions below if you are interested in adopting one of our Waggytails! Mama is a 10lb (although she could lose about 2), 2 year old pomeranian mix who just flew in from LA! Inside, Mama loves everyone and anyone (it took a day or two for her to warm up to her foster fur-sister, but now they get along famously)! She loves the crate and happily goes inside for a snooze. Outside, Mama is still getting used to the hustle and bustle of NYC. She is shy when dogs and new people approach, and startles with loud noises, but recovers quickly. She uses pads and does her business outside. This sweet, young girl would make a great addition to any family!  Up-to-date on vaccines (rabies, DHPP, bordatella), recent dental, dewormed, and spayed. Will be chipped soon. Please contact us DIRECTLY using the instructions below if you are interested in adopting one of our Waggytails! Maui is a 2ish-years, 7-pound male chihuahua mix originally from TX. He is energetic and friendly towards humans and dogs. Maui - aka Walker because of those legs for days - is young and a wee bit mischevious and likes to find things to chew on, but he is easily redirected with appropriate toys. He has been doing GREAT in his crate and settles down quickly once his foster leaves. Maui is great on a leash and loves to walk and meet everyone who walks by. He loves getting pets, even from strangers and kids! He does his business outside or on a pee pad. Maui would be an amazing addition to any family!  Received rabies and dhpp vaccines, microchipped, neutered, heartworm negative. Muffin is an approximately 5 month old male black and white dsh that came to us from the Animal Medical Center.  Muffin was dropped off at AMC about 2 months ago by a good Samaritan who found him on the road with an obvious leg and eye injury. He had a partial degloving wound on his right hind limb, which has since been closed and healed. He also had a right tibial fracture and femoral fracture that did not require fixation. Muffin is a very healthy cat otherwise.  Though a little shy, Muffin is super sweet and affectionate once he knows you. He LOVES other cats so we're looking for a home with another cat for him. Muffin will require some socialization at the beginning to help him feel comfortable around his new home. Muffin is FeLV/FIV snap negative and has been dewormed. His vaccines are up to date.  Please contact us DIRECTLY using the instructions below if you are interested in fostering or adopting one of our Waggytails! Ophelia is 7lb, 2 year old chihuahua mix who just flew in last week from LA! She has the most gorgeous coloring! She is said to be good with dogs, cats, and kids. Her foster says: She is the definition of sweet and sassy. Ophelia loves to cuddle in your lap, refusing all dog beds available to her! She sometimes barks at dogs when on leash, but lived with other dogs in her LA foster's home. When we go on walks, prepare to run! She is an explorer at heart and has adjusted quickly to the Big Apple. She gets along great with just about anyone, as long as you let her smother you in kisses and cuddles. She is crate-trained and housebroken, and totally fine when left home alone. She will make a wonderful companion to just about anyone! Ruthie (fka Sweet Pea) is a tough little 2ish-years, 8-pounds female mix. Brought into the city shelter as a stray, she is curious but still terrified in our foster care. Ruthie cannot yet be picked up - still runs away from her humans if they move too close. However, if she is laying comfortably in her bed or crate, it's obvious how much Ruthie has longed for safe and loving human touch, and allows herself to be pet. Ruthie has started to follow her fosters around the house - from a close distance - and has begun to take treats from our hands. Coming from the shelter, Ruthie appears to love her crate and feel very safe in her own space, we would even say she is crate-trained. She's smart - has learned her name in one day - and also picked up the concept of wee-wee pads also in one day. This gorgeous spotted girl (who is quiet as a mouse) has some confidence to build and trust to learn, but it's only been 24 hours and she has made some small yet noticeable progress. Try not to judge her by her recent haircut because she's self-conscious about it, but by her inner beauty. Spayed, microchipped, heartworm negative. Received rabies and bordetella vaccines, and first of two da2pp vaccines (needs 2nd).  Please contact us DIRECTLY using the instructions below if you are interested in adopting one of our Waggytails! Snow is 2ish-years, 10-pounds male chihuahua mix from the Brooklyn animal shelter. He is a sweet companion but a bit shy initially. Snow is affectionate and loving once he gains your trust. This clingy little boy is weary in unfamilar places, but quietly sits in a safe lap or in his open-door crate (he'll go in on his own, but afraid to be put in by someone). Snow is medium to high energy, plays and behaves as normal as any other adorable cutie would! He walks well on a leash and is getting the hang of house-training. He was previously in foster care with other dogs and cats - fine with dogs (and older kids) but not thrilled about the cat. Snow needs a family who can be patient with his guarding issues and fear of new people.  Vaccinated for rabies, bordatella, and 1 dhpp. Neutered and microchipped. Stormi is a 8ish-year-old, 14 lb schnazuer mix (maybe some dachshund?). This sweet girl is a ball of uber-friendly active, well-behaved and loving scruff! With her big soulful eyes and her droopy ears and beard, she looks like a dog from an old Disney movie who gets lost, had an adventure, and then ends up in a loving home with her new family sleeping by the fire on a huge pillow. That could be you! Stormi loves her people and always wants to be in sight of them, so if you're a household of more than one, she will always be trying to find the best spot to lie down and keep an eye on everyone. She also sleeps in her own bed at night and spends a lot of time in the various beds around the house instead of getting up on the sofa. She is getting along really well with her grumpy foster brother and knows when to give him space. She LOVES her walks and bounds into the air when you pick up her leash and trots like a pro on the street. She is fully housetrained, enjoys a house full of people, greets everyone who stops on the street with an offer to pet her and loves other dogs. Hold on tight to that leash, because she wants to say hello to everyone!   Received rabies, da2pp, bordatella vaccines. Heartworm negative, microchipped, and spayed. Winnie is 9ish-months, 8-pounds female chihuahua/dachshund mix with the shiniest brindle coat. She is very shy (probably due to her past life as a stray in TX) but very sweet and affectionate, and very easily handled. Winnie let her foster trim her nails without ANY protest - the girl knows pampering! She is very good about using pee pads, but also goes potty outside with a little patience and encouragment. Sweet Winnie is still adjusting to the sights and sounds of NYC but is showing lots of improvement each day. She loves to snuggle and follows her foster around in the house, happily wagging her tail. For a young dog, Winnie is fairly low-key and quiet, but also has moments of real playfulness with her squeaky toys. She's still apprehensive around strangers - especially loud people - but shows curiosity if she is approached gently. This gorgeous girl is also curious about other dogs and kids. Winnie would probably be best in a calm home with another friendly dog who can show her how to be more confident and truly comfortable.  Received rabies and dhpp vaccines.
