Meet B.J. Status: Available for foster to adopt Age: 9-10 years B.J. has one of those stories that seem to be filled with lots of change and disruption and moving from house to house and person to person. When you hear the story you kind of expect some issues, but we met B.J. and were amazing at how well he was taking yet another change. We were glad the change was us since the only thing he was facing was the uncertainty of a county shelter with too many dogs already. The age of B.J has been all over, but based on our assessment he is in the 8-9 range. He's a GSD mix so won't get any bigger than his medium size frame. He is a very good boy and hasn't reacted to any of the dogs. He's missing his own person and a little confused by the kennel, but he is handling it all with grace and a good spirity. He has been good on a walk and with the volunteers so far. We have only noticed that he is fond of his food and sharing is something that he will need some obedience work on. For that reason he would not be good for a home with small children or other pets if the adopter is not committed to safe separation practices with food and treats. He does not have the high energy drive and being a senior he's pretty content to hang with his person. Buckaroo Adoption Status: Available for foster or adoption Age: 2 years old Meet Buckaroo. Buckaroo came to us when he couldn't get along with the goats in his home - yeah that herding thing kicked in a bit too much. He has lived in a home and done well with children and cats though. He's been known to catch a "cat nap" with his feline friend from time to time. We wish these photos could have "touch-o-vison" as this boy is so super soft to pet. He's a bit thin, so getting some weight on him will be on his new homes agenda. We are working on it now. He's a bit timid with men at first but he warms up and just wants to say hello and be inquisitive to all you are doing. We know that he will come out of his shell when he's comfortable and we can't wait to see that! We think he will do well in a home with another confident dog to help him with his confidence. Hello all you special needs adopters, you will love easy going Donny! He’s a little bit rock and roll! Donny doesn’t let his challenges prevent him from being a typical GSD puppy. He likes to play, wrestle, chew and have a good time. Donny and his sibling, Marie, were in a shelter with little chance of adoption when Saving Paws stepped in to save them. Both have been diagnosed with Bilateral Straight Leg. The condition affects both hind limbs that do not allow the joints to flex in a way that is needed to have a normal gait. It doesn’t mean that they cannot walk. Donny’s condition is more significant, but with all the efforts of his foster family and volunteers, he is actually able to be mobile without his wheelchair for short periods! Donny is a big goofball and loves everyone and dogs. He uses his wheels and he fast in them. Donny is still a GSD puppy so he is best in his exercise pen when left for any period of time. Donny , aka "Hog Boy", is a garbage disposal per his foster - he loves to eat! Donny is working on his leash skills too, so obedience work can still be modified with this dog. The biggest thing the fosters want you to know is that Donny and his sibling Marie are adaptable and really have very few limitations than any of their other dogs. Non-skid rugs or Yoga mats work amazing to help him move around. Meet Duke! Adoption Status: Adoptable, in foster with Mitzi Age: 4-5 years old If you don't fall in love with this boy's amazing eyes at hello, we would be shocked! We are estimating this boy to be around 5 years old. He is a gentle boy that's primary goal in life is to be with you. His foster says he's the ultimate snuggler and an amazing dog! Duke has done well in his foster with another bossy female GSD. We do know that he is not found of the little dogs, so no small dogs or cats would be considered for this boy. We would love to see him in a home that just dedicates all their love and attention on him. He would love to be the "King" of his home! Duke enjoys car rides and going on walks. He likes to play with toys and doesn't destroy them in seconds like some GSDs can. He's just that nice wonderful example of what the GSD breed can be. Meet Kooper! Kooper is the sweetest little girl you’ll ever meet! She loves to bounce and jump so much that she has earned the nickname of "pogo" with some of the volunteers. She's got a little bit of everything in her, including GSD. Kooper is the perfect size for someone not wanting a large dog but a little of the GSD look. She does well with all the dogs she's been introduced to so far and LOVES to play. She's a playful and energetic pup, but she didn't start out that way. Looking at her now, you would never guess that she was on the euthanasia list for a medical condition that was causing her to lose weight at an alarming rate. She was originally picked up as a stray and weighed a healthy 37 pounds. As we would expect, she was quickly adopted out, but within a couple of weeks she was picked up again as a stray and the new owners never came to get her. Fortunately, she was adopted out again about two weeks later, but she had lost weight, but this was not something noticed in the county shelter system. Her new adoptive parents realized something was wrong and after medical testing, she was diagnosed with Megaesophagus, a condition that requires dogs to have a specific diet and feeding methods to live healthy lives. The new owners felt they were in over their heads and returned her to the shelter with the new medical information. Kooper was sadly down to 21 pounds and her health was now in jeopardy. She came to Saving Paws weighing only 18 pounds. SPR had the experience to take care of her, so she was brought in so volunteers could care for her. Volunteers have been working for weeks to find the right combination of foods, medications and feeding positioning. We are happy to report it's working and her feeding has become easier and easier! After two months, Kooper now weighs 35 pounds, rarely vomits her food and plays like the young 1-year-old she is. Kooper is active and happy, but her feeding needs make her a special needs dog. She needs to be fed in her Bailey chair twice a day. She has learned that her Bailey Chair means dinner time, so she’s raring to go! She can be a little shy at first around strangers but quickly warms up once she gets to know you. We are not surprised as her x-rays show where she was shot with a BB gun! Although we haven’t had her around kids, we think she will get used to kids over time. SPR is dedicated to making sure that Kooper continues to thrive so she will be a foster-to-adopt dog. SPR will provide the new family with her Bailey Chair, initial supply of food with directions and all the support to ensure that she does well in her new home. Let's find Marie a home! Don’t let this girl’s “special gifts” fool you, she is learning to “bunny hop” walk to get to where she wants to be. Marie can be a little timid with new people but she is working on meeting people all the time and realizing they are good to be with. Marie needs to be in a home with another dog as that gives her so much confidence. Slow introduction with other dogs is the best for this girl, which is not uncommon for a dog with special needs. She will bond with her new doggy friend if given the change and time. Marie needs a house with other active dogs. She uses her wheels occasionally, but does not need them. The majority of the time she walks on all 4's using both back legs as one, (bunny hop), and she is fast! Her fosters say the "can't catch her when she runs anymore". Marie is still pretty petite at 43 pounds and we don't expect her to get too much bigger which for her legs, adopters need to be committed to maintaining healthy weight. Her adoptive home will be best to have a lot of carpet or flooring with good traction. Non-skid rugs or Yoga mats work amazing to help her move around. Marie has been working with a swimming rehabilitation therapist to build her core strength to better help her ambulate, so a home with a pool that she can continue her progress will be perfect. We are looking for a home that is willing to help her continue on her path to independent mobility while looking at her as “just another GSD” that needs training, love and exercise. Mordecai or "Mordy" as we call him, is a tall lanky adolescent GSD. Morky is a very handsome 2 year old GSD that arrived after a stay hold at the local county shelter expired.Mordy has poor manner with other dogs, so we think that a home dedicated to having just one dog to love and devote their time to would be PERFECT. Mordy is smart and he will work for treats and praise. That's a great tool for any future owner. He is a very happy go lucky boy when he is out playing and riding in the car! Being a young GSD obedience work will be a must. If you haven't done your research on the breed please do. This breed needs phycial and mental stimulation to be good members of the family. We want Mordecai to be in an active family with a committment to his training and excercise needs. He's a big boy and in all his youthful energy had could knock down smaller kids, sol older kids or teens would be preferred. Meet Noelle Status: Still raising her puppies - available for foster or foster to adopt Mid to late Febuary Age: 18 months - 2 years old If you haven't heard, Noelle is a mom that was in a high kill shelter. No one appeared to know she was pregnant and she was doubled in her kennel with another dog. One day they noticed she had puppies! A local rescue contact SPR and asked us to take this Christmas time mom and her new family of 9 puppies! Noelle and her puppies were rushed to us from California and she is taking care of raising her family. Noelle will likely be ready to leave her babies in Mid - late February. We let mom tell us when she is done, but we try to have a warm and loving foster or foster to adopt home waiting for her! We need to give her some time to dry up and let all of her body heal froom having puppies, then she will be able to complete her spay. She is done having puppies and will get to be a loving family dog for the rest of her life. Noelle is a petite girl and so super sweet! She is all about loving on you and being by your side. She likes to go on walks, but right now she is pretty busy with her puppies so she can't get much of that in. She has been great with other dogs even though she is a mom. She needs to gain more weight as this girl came to us not only feeding herself and 9 babies but with a case of worms that we have worked to safely eliminate. Our beautiful Nova is still looking for her furever home! Nova was rescued from the local shelter. Nova has been with us for a while as she needs a special home and we just haven’t found the PERFECT fit we are looking for. Nova is about 4 years old. Nova prefers to be a one person dog. She picks her person and they are the love of her life. The other side is she doesn’t like to share her person, so we believe Nova should be an only dog so that she doesn’t feel the need to share her person or stuff with another dog. We don’t know how she will be with cats, but given what we know an only pet home might just be the best for her. She wants to be with her special person all the time, so her new person will need to work on establishing boundaries for Nova. Nova is very athletic and can jump pretty high. She is not crate trained, but she does know her bed and can be given a command to go to her bed. She is housebroken. She enjoys toys, and can amuse herself with them. She's has medium energy level. Her ideal home is a quiet home preferably with a female owner (or a male with lots of patience and understanding) . We don’t believe that she would be best with children as she can bark at those who are not her special person. She would do best in a home were someone is home a lot and can give her the attention she craves. She will need some practice on her leash skills as she is not going on walks regularly since she will only go with her special person. We are looking for an adopter who would be willing to come and visit with Nova over a period of time and get to know her and earn her trust, therefore living near our center in North Glendale area would be best or a willingness to travel. We won’t be adopting her out of the county. She is special, but we know a perfect home is out there. We would really love to see Nova get the home she is looking for but also know that matching her with a right fit is the most important thing we can do for her. Meet Smokey Joe Adoption Status: Available for Foster or Adoption Age: 3-4 years Smokey Joe came to us as a special needs dog who was found and take to a rural Arizona shelter. With little hope that he would find a home, we were asked to help. Smokey Joe could not be any sweeter! He truly wins everyone over at "hello" Although he is sight impaired, he LOVES car rides and going for walks. He is a perfect gentleman at both. He is just as content to be laying at your feet while your work on the computer or watch tv. He does great with other dogs and has not interest in felines. We think this dog is special in so many ways! Smokey Joe is looking to find that place to call home. He would do well with a retired home as he isn't a really big dog.
