Charlie, affectionately dubbed Little Shop, is a special guy in the hearts of TBL volunteers. He is great with other dogs, loves treats, loves toys, knows how to sit on command, housetrained, crate trained, and very affectionate. Despite his adorable, cuddly and fluffy exterior, this little 30 pound fella does need some time and space when meeting new people. Charlie will require a patient and experienced owner who will understands that he takes more time than the average pup to trust and be 100% comfortable with his surroundings. Since he can be very sensitive to quick and sudden movements toward him, he will be best in a home with no children. As long as there is a mutual understanding and trust established, Charlie really is a sweet and loving little dude. He likes it best if you let him approach you for petting, and when he does he will nuzzle you for extra rubs behind his ears and try to curl up in your lap. The first time Charlie went home with a volunteer, he did not have a single accident, and immediately picked up a toy to play with and ran around the yard, simply chipper as can be. He loves treats more than anything and has taken treats out of hands on a flat palm. We have seen him thrive and shine in a warm and loving environment; just check him out with his favorite volunteer at our most recent WADIN event! Charlie knows it can be hard for an older dog to find a forever home, especially if he is the sort of fellow who requires a little more patience and understanding than other dogs, but he cannot give up hope and neither will we. Charlie is 9 years old as of late 2018 and we know just what his Christmas wish will be!  If you'd like to meet Charlie, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt show less

Fanchon first arrived at TBL earlier this summer after we rescued him from a kill-shelter. Despite his incredibly handsome good looks and sweet personality, he has gone several months without any luck in securing himself a forever family. So we sent him to a foster home to help him come out of his shell a little more, and he is thriving! Fanchon was very shy and submissive in his first couple of days in foster care. But it was clear that all he needed was a little love, because he has since gained tons of confidence, wags his tail at everyone, enjoys his walks, and initiates play with his foster sibling. Fanchon is a smart, sweet boy who comes perfectly housebroken. He has a slight limp from an old injury, but it does not slow him down any and it does not affect him negatively in his day to day life. Fanchon loves to be pet, and he leans his whole body into you if you try to stop too soon. He gets along well with other dogs after a proper introduction. Fanchon figured out "sit" pretty quickly on his own with the persuasion of some treats. He recently enjoyed an outing to the busy Poway Market, and completed a 2.5 mile trail hike with his foster dad. Fanchon is about 2 and a half years old and is a great medium size of 39 pounds. If you're in the market for a sweet, obedient, engaging, sweet and easygoing buddy, Fanchon would like to volunteer himself! Meet Joe, a sweet and docile soul inside and out! Joe was saved by our partner rescue Save Korean Dogs. He was bred as dog meat to be sold in the Korean dog meat trade. Many of these dogs were born into total darkness, never felt sunshine on their backs, or knew any human interactions as they were kept in cages raised above the ground. This was life as Joe knew it, and as such, he was very afraid of human touch when he first arrived at The Barking Lot in November. As you may have seen in our social media videos early on, Joe would cower and flinch if you touched his fur, and he did not understand the concept of leash walking in the slightest. Fast forward a few months, and Joe is making us all incredibly proud with his progress and how far he has come! As of April 2018, he has been promoted to one of our front office greeters. Joe is blossoming in foster care with our director, coming up to volunteers who come in and out of the office to say hello, and going on daily walks which he has grown to love. One of his new favorite American pastimes is getting Puppuccinos at the neighborhood Starbucks every morning with his foster siblings. Joe is still bashful around new people, but he comes more and more out of his shell with each passing week. He is a curious, playful, mild-mannered, and engaging boy. Joe is about 1 year 8 months old, and he is a great medium size of about 45-50 pounds. If you would like to give Joe the forever home he is so deserving of, let us know!   If you'd like to meet Joe, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less

If you are a fan of Dante from the Disney Pixar movie Coco, then you are sure to love his real life doppelganger, Kyle! Kyle was saved by our partner rescue Soi Dog Foundation and came to us all the way from Thailand in May 2018. He was in pretty bad shape when he first arrived at the SDF facility, and was clearly neglected and mistreated in his past life. Since his unique hairless coat requires some extra care, we have placed him in foster with one of our volunteers in the meantime, and he is thriving! Kyle is currently learning a lot about daily life in an American home and what it is like to be an American dog. He is a friendly, engaging, and affectionate fella who enjoys being pet. He likes to gives big sloppy kisses on your face if presented with an opportunity. Kyle loves food and he is very treat motivated, which helps him pick up training at a good pace. His foster parents are working on housetraining with him, and he has already learned how to sit and perform certain touch commands in a short time span. Kyle shares his foster home with 2 other dogs, and while he gets along quite well with them, he prefers to stay out of their way and observe their interactions. He enjoys his walks and has no trouble keeping up on nice long strolls and hikes. Skincare wise, Kyle would need sunscreen if he is going to be out in the sun for long periods of time, but otherwise, the occasional application of lotion whenever his skin feels dry goes a long way. His foster mom ordered him his own doggie sunsuit to wear on outings - he definitely rocks that look! Kyle is roughly 4 years old and tips the scales at about 55 pounds. Kyle would love a forever home to call his own! If you'd like to meet Kyle, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt   show less

Say hello to Miter, a small and mighty force when it comes to snuggling and being cute in general! Miter is a sweet, affectionate, social, playful, loving, loyal, engaging, and happy-go-lucky pup. He was saved by an Ensenada-based rescue group called Ellos Son La Razon along with his best bud Montero. Miter is currently enjoying the life of a foster dog, and he is proving himself to be a lovely houseguest! His foster mom reports that Miter has never met a stranger and he bonds with people very quickly. He will not hesitate to invite himself into your lap. He loves his doggie foster sibling and foster cousin, is sweet around children, frequents the local dog park, likes to nap on the couch next to you, is great on a leash, enjoys playing with toys, and follows his foster mom around the house like a happy shadow. One adorable way Miter melts your heart is the way he hugs your hand with his arms when you pet him. And, his foster mom says he looks like a cute little bunny when he is sleeping. Miter was crate trained from the get-go, and his foster mom is proud to share that Miter is housebroken! He now gets the run of the house when the humans are away, and does not leave any surprises for his people to find when they get home. Miter loves spending time with his foster family (both two and four-legged) and would make a loyal little sidekick for any lucky family. He is about 2 and a half years old and tips the scales at 13 pounds. Miter, or Mighty as he has been affectionately dubbed, is a total sweetheart who just wants to love and be loved!   If you'd like to meet Miter, please visit http://www.thebarkinglotrescue.com/adopt show less

The name Niccolo is of Italian origin meaning victorious; conqueror of the people. Give this handsome boy a chance and he will conquer your heart! Say hello to Niccolo, a scruffy and happy-go-lucky Yellow Labrador Retriever/Wheaten Terrier mix. Rescued from a high kill shelter in San Bernardino County, Niccolo made fast friends at TBL of both the two and four legged variety. He is in a large play group of pups of varying sizes, and he is fantastic at following directions. Niccolo is incredibly smart, engaging, attentive, and he knows how to sit, lay down, and shake paws on command. True to his terrier roots, he is a very intelligent boy who will be quick to pick up more tricks. Niccolo is currently enjoying the life of a foster home, and he is a stellar houseguest. He is crate trained, completely housebroken, and knows to paw at the back door to use the facilities, or at his leash to go on a walk. He would do well with a patient leader who can give him a little time to build up trust gradually and organically at the very beginning, and Niccolo will return the favor with an effortless lifelong companionship. Niccolo is about 4 and a half years old as of May 2018, and he is a great medium size of 50 pounds. If you are looking for a sweet, smart, mellow, non-destructive, polite and engaging pup, Niccolo may just be the one for you!   If you'd like to meet Niccolo, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less

Say hello to Pee Wee, our token pittie from Thailand! This fun, friendly, spunky, and lovable gal was rescued from the illegal dog meat trade in Southeast Asia. She was saved by our rescue partner The Soi Dog Foundation, and flown stateside to America in search of her forever family. Ever since the day she arrived, Pee Wee has been keeping volunteers smiling with her goofy and playful antics. She has so much zest and joie de vivre in everything she does. Pee Wee is currently enjoying the life of a foster dog with our director, and she has proven herself to be a good girl in a home environment as well. Pee wee is completely housebroken and crate trained, and she shares her foster home with lots of other doggie foster siblings. Once introduced properly and given some time to build trust, she is fantastic with other dogs. Pee Wee is a great companion, and she is pretty mellow and well-behaved indoors. We can tell she is still a bit tentative on the idea of indoor home living by the way she stands around and watches her people instead of relaxing on her bed. However, even though this is a newer concept to her, Pee Wee is adapting well because she knows not to be rambunctious nor rowdy inside. She enjoys going on walks, especially if another dog is joining her. She especially loves morning stops for Puppuccinos at Starbucks with the pack. Pee Wee has made many trips to dog-friendly restaurants and breweries around town, and she is learning the ropes in terms of obedient behavior while dining. Overall, Pee Wee is looking for solid direction from her humans, and she would love to work her way up the obedience class ranks. Pee Wee is 3 years old and tips the scales at 42 pounds. Do not miss out on your chance to meet this lively, exuberant, sweet, and happy-go-lucky girl for yourself!   If you'd like to meet Pee Wee, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less

Here is a fun fact about our pretty girl Pinky: she was actually featured as Pet of the Week for South Bay and Harbor Area shelters! How she found herself in the shelter system in San Pedro beats us, but she has come a long way since her rescue. She spent a few months in foster with our director, where she lived in harmony with resident dogs and learned her house manners. Today, Pinky is housetrained, knows her basic commands, knows fetch, is good with dogs, and loves to gives kisses to her favorite human companions. She does need a firm and experienced owner who can show her right from the beginning that Pinky is not in charge, but once you set those initial boundaries with her, she is just like any other happy-go-lucky pooch. Pinky likes to spend her time roaming the play yards, wrestling with her canine buddies, or chasing after toys you throw for her. She also enjoys going on walks or skateboard-walks with some of our volunteers! Pinky is a playful, active, loving, and great dog who would make a wonderful hiking or running buddy. She just turned 8 years old in May 2018. She tipped the scales at an even 50 pounds at her last weigh-in. If you think Pinky sounds like the right girl for you and you are up to the task of giving this long-timer a well-deserved forever home, Pinky will joyfully reciprocate with a lifetime of cuddles and kisses! Age: 6 months (born 4/6/18) Weight: 10 pounds, 10-15 pounds fully grown Rescue: The Pirate Puppies were born at The Barking Lot early April. We rescued their very pregnant mama from Mexico at the end of March and she was due to pop any day. There were 3 sisters (Barbossa, Dalma, and Tortuga), and 5 brothers (Beckett, Bootstrap, Gibbs, Murtogg, and Sparrow). As of early October, Sparrow is the last remaining male available for adoption!  Temperament: Gentle, even-keeled, quiet, loving, and sweet. Sparrow is our special boy and holds a big place in the hearts of all the TBL volunteers. You see, Sparrow is a distemper survivor. He took the viral illness the hardest, and it left him with a pretty sever involuntary muscle tic that renders him incapable of walking. It almost seems like he has a case of chronic hiccups. As such, Sparrow is a very low-key and low-maintenance pup as he spends most of his day napping and people-watching from his favorite cushion. Sparrow has been affectionately nicknamed "inchworm", and if you met him in person, you would understand. While it can be heart-wrenching for some to see a puppy with an ongoing muscle twitch, rest assured Sparrow is in the company of many puppy playmates and is showered by lots of attention from volunteers. There is a chance that with time, his muscle tic can diminish somewhat in severity. For now, Sparrow will patiently await the right family who can see past his disability and love him for the sweet sweet soul that he is!  If you'd like to meet The Pirate Puppies, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt show less

The name Popeye likely puts in mind large strong muscles, and while it does describe this big strong guy, Popeye is sweet as honey and has a heart of gold! Popeye has proved to be a delightful house guest in a foster home in the past. He is a smart cookie who knows Sit, Leave It, Off, Stay, Down, and Shake. He is completely housetrained and got along wonderfully with all 5 other resident dogs, ranging in various size and age. We have seen him kiss a 10 pound Chiweenie, or snuggle up against a big Leonberger mix. Popeye is a handsome, goofy, friendly, happy and playful 7-year-old (as of May 2018) with a lot of love to give.  Do not let the big muscles fool you: this guy is all heart and is the gentlest cuddler in the world. Popeye is a romantic guy, ready for long walks on the beach followed by a quiet snuggle session. Popeye is great on a leash and has an easy-going demeanor. He is also an athletic boy and would make a great hiking and running partner. He ran 4-7 miles per day with his foster parents, and is great at keeping pace! Did we mention that he is a rock star and  fan favorite on weekend hikes? Popeye is ready for someone to take him home. In the meantime, this 70-pound lover will continue to charm his way into all of our hearts! If you'd like to meet Popeye, please visit http://www.thebarkinglotrescue.com/adopt. show less

Meet our little love bug, Queso! Queso became a member of our temporary barking family when one of our volunteers found him as a stray, but could not locate his home after weeks of trying. When Queso first arrived, he was shy and scared of his new surroundings, but after a few days of receiving consistent attention (and treats) from volunteers, he really came out of his shell. Queso is currently enjoying the life of a foster dog and he is thriving! He made himself right at home and it turns out he is perfectly housebroken. When his foster mom is away, Queso is left to roam freely about the house, and he does not get into anything or chew anything other than his toys. He likes to play, go on walks, hang out with his foster sister, loves the beach, and will snuggle up anytime a human is sitting or laying down next to him. At night, he prefers to sleep under the blankets by your feet. Queso is a great petite size of around 10 pounds and would adapt well to whatever type of living situation his forever family offered. He does have a seizure condition that requires medication every 12 hours. His foster mom reports that he has been taking his meds like a good boy with no problems at all. He takes them wrapped in cheese or pill pockets and gladly eats them right up. Queso is fantastic with other dogs and even cats too. He falls in love with humans quickly and will form an unconditional bond with his person. Queso loves to be cuddled, though he can be a bit wary if you try to pick him up too fast before he is comfortable, so he would do best in a home with older kids. He likes to say hi to the neighborhood kids (and adults alike) while out on walks. All in all, Queso is a sweetheart who just wants to love and be loved in return. He is about 4 years old as of September 2018 and he would love a forever family to call his own!  If you'd like to meet Queso, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt show less

This is the story of Shake, a Korean dog meat trade survivor who has come a long long way, both physically and figuratively speaking! Shake was saved by our partner rescue Save Korean Dogs. She was bred as dog meat to be sold in the Korean dog meat trade. Many of these dogs were born into total darkness, never felt sunshine on their backs, or knew any human interactions as they were kept in cages raised above the ground. This was life as Shake knew it, and as such, she was incredibly afraid of everyone and everything when she first arrived at The Barking Lot. She would run from all volunteers, cower in corners, and would work herself into a frenzy if anyone ever tried to get a leash around her neck. To her credit, she was always great around other dogs, with whom she felt a sense of familiarity and comfort. With lots of consistency and patience, Shake would eventually stop running away at the sight of people, and would even allow volunteers to pet her without flinching. Then, as you may have seen on our social media videos, she began to learn how walk down the sidewalk on a lead! Slowly but surely, she got more and more used to daily routines. Today, Shake is enjoying the life of a foster dog with our director, and she has wowed us all with her progress. For a dog that was deemed to be feral upon arrival, Shake has made leaps and bounds of progress in just a few short months. Today, you can see her amongst our front office greeters, coming up to sniff people curiously as they went about their business. At home, Shake is very obedient, inquisitive, and engaging. She is 100% crate trained (as is the case with all of our Korean dog meat trade survivors - they recognize the crate as their safe place), and has never had an accident at home to date. She caught onto the tight schedule that the rest of the pack ran on and assimilated with ease. One of her new favorite American pastimes is getting Puppuccinos at the neighborhood Starbucks every morning with her foster siblings. Shake has been cat tested and she has done as well around felines as she has around other dogs. Though still incredibly shy around new people, she is coming more and more out of her shell with each passing week. Shake is just a few months over 1 year old, and she is a great medium size of 30 pounds. Size is no indication of personality, and this holds very true for our favorite low-rider Shorty! He is a bundle of fun packed into a stout 40-pound package. We rescued Shorty in November from San Bernardino where he was picked up as a stray. He has gorgeous red and white coloring, a short and easy-to-care-for coat, inquisitive chestnut colored eyes, and a sturdy and adorable low-to-the-ground physique. Shorty has the strength and affection of a Staffy and the sweet nature of a Bassett. He is a natural people-pleaser and will happily wag his tail at the sight of you. He enjoys treats and is all paws on deck when it comes to training and rewards time. When we get him out on a leash, he is eager to explore and loves to check out his surroundings. When we sit down with him for some quality one-on-one time, he will snug right up nice and close and gently wag his tail while enjoying a nice patting. Shorty is 6 years old as of late 2017, and he still has a whole lifetime of love and affection to give to his true forever family! Venus has got it all! She is ridiculously adorable, and she is very well-behaved. Venus is a great pup. This Shiba Inu/Cattle dog mix captures the hearts of many, and rightfully so. Venus is a Soi Dog rescued from the illegal dog meat trade in Southeast Asia by Soi Dog Foundation, our partner rescue based in Thailand. She and a group of her friends traveled from the SDF facility in Phuket and were flown stateside to The Barking Lot in November 2017. As of June 2018, Venus is enjoying the comfortable life of a foster dog, and she is pretty darn perfect! She is intelligent, fun-loving, very playful with other dogs, is housebroken, rarely barks, loves to give soft kisses, is non-destructive, and rides in the car like a champ. Venus can be skittish around sudden movements, but she has truly come a long way. She does a little jig when she sees the leash come out, and will sit directly in front of her foster mom to ensure she does not get overlooked for her walk. The only thing Venus loves more than going on walks is getting Puppuccinos at the local Starbucks. So much so, in fact, that those little paper cups never stand a chance - she tears them into 26 pieces every time, making sure to get every last drop. She is just under 6 years old and weighs about 35 pounds. Venus is a good dog and will make a great new pack addition to one lucky family!   If you'd like to meet Venus, please visit www.thebarkinglot.net/adopt. show less
