Meet Slate the easiest GSD to fall in love with…ever…..seriously. This one-year-old male is beyond precious with his black, shiny coat, tall, attentive ears, soulful eyes, and his desire to cuddle up with his human. Slate is not your typical young male – he does have his spurts of energy, but in reality, he would prefer just to take a walk, have a quick snack and then take a nap. This is why he and I love Sundays.
Slate was found as a stray. It was obvious that he had spent little time, if any, inside a house. It took a few days for him to trust that food would be given twice a day, every day. He eventually stopped digging in the trash, but will still occasionally try to steal snacks off the counter if they are left unattended. He is curious about everything from closets, to the vacuum, to the TV – which he will watch. Slate watched his two resident foster canine brothers hop on the couch, cuddle with us and get petted; Slate learned within minutes, that this was something he could not only do, but something he loved. So, the minute you sit – anywhere – there is your sweet shadow, watching, protecting and hoping to get some loving.
Slate loves to have the elementary kids in the neighborhood hug and pet him. He sits so calmly while they fawn all over him, offering a quick kiss here and there. The littler toddler kids tend to freak him out a little bit. Perhaps it is their unsteady walk or loud noises, but he is not comfortable around the very small children. Children 8 years of age and up would be best suited for this handsome boy.
Slate is learning about toys, and playing with other dogs. It is fun to tease him with the laser light, as he has still not figured it out. Slate will chase it and wait patiently for it to reappear. Slate tends to guard his favorite toy. His resident brothers are used to fosters, so when he barks, they just leave him alone. He will play tug-of-war, and keep-away with the other dogs with the rope bones and tennis balls. It is just that one particular little toy that he protects. Patience and guidance will be needed the first couple of weeks or so to make sure he learns that sharing is ok.
Slate is crate trained, and since he is still prone to a little mischief, he is crated during the day while I work. He has never tried escaped from it, and seems quite content when I return home. Slate is looking for a home where there are plenty of people to give him the love and affection he so desires….and deserves! Please fill out an application and put this sweet boy’s name on it.

Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue
GHGSDR volunteers are dedicated to saving as many German Shepherds in the Greater Houston Metro area as humanly possible - based on current resources of available foster homes, the rate at which we can find suitably matched adoptive homes, and of course, financial resources for veterinary care.
GHGSDR Shepherds mostly come from animal shelters where they are awaiting euthanasia. All of these Shepherd Dogs need loving, forever homes and families to call their own. We have several GSDs available for adoption and we regularly take in more Shepherds under our wings and into our Rescue Program, increasing the numbers of dogs available for adoption. Whenever we can, we also work with other dog rescue groups in Texas and nationwide to help ensure the safety and security of these wonderful animals.
