Adopt Penelope

Female German Shepherd Dog

Here comes Penelope! Penelope is what I would describe as one of the MOST fun dogs I have ever met. She is wildly entertaining, especially when she is playing with only her shadow and jumping like a jackrabbit. She is super playful, especially when she puts her head under water in the pool and blows bubbles. Yes she does that! Best of all, she is the most super snuggler in the whole world. It is not enough to be near you when she wants to love you, she has to be as close as possible. Most often her paws are hugging you, and she lays her head on you and truly looks into your soul with the dreamiest eyes ever. I mention all of this, because it is what has completely stolen my heart, and to let everyone know that if they are looking for a very serious, discipline-minded shepherd, it probably is NOT Penelope. She is simply and beautifully, a "silly heart!"

Penelope is estimated to be between 1.5 to 2years old. She is spayed, heartworm negative, house trained, and crate trained. She has learned "sit" but some of the other commands are still a bit of a mystery, each time we try them. Penelope came into our home about one month ago. She currently lives with three adults, one 10-month old baby named Wyatt, two 100lb+ female GSD's named Quinn and Nooska, a tough little 14lb, 4 year old female Jack Russell named Tommy Lee, and a suuuuper savvy 14lb cat named Ka'ulu. Penelope is brilliant with our baby. She has my full and complete trust. She is so gentle and kind and will absolutely wait until Wyatt's cracker is clearly on the floor, totally discarded, before she quietly sneaks away with it (sarcasm is deliberate!). Penelope gets along well with all of the dogs. Her best friend in the house is little Tommy Lee. They love to rough house and they both practice their play bows. Penelope is still trying to perfect that bow. She often slides forward and looks like a youtube "epic fail" clip. Silly heart! Although Penelope coexists with a cat currently, she still tends to be a bit too playful for me to qualify her as being "good" with cats. She is a bit clueless with Ka'ulu's (very clear) messages, both verbal and physical. As a matter of fact, it surprises her each time she gets a swift swat. Clueless-silly heart!

When Penelope first came to our home, she would very quietly steal anything she could get her paws on. The list includes shoes, baby toys, boxes, papers, toilet paper, and more shoes. Anything left in the rubbish bin was when she hit the mother lode. Needless to say, we have had to do a lot of cleaning up after this little girl. She needs definite correction in this area. This is a toy, this is not! It was during some of these trying times that we started referring to her as Piper the Swiper. It has stuck and so have some of the old habits that have not quite taken their last breath just yet. It is, however, a work in progress. Did I mention clueless silly-heart? I mention these quirks, simply because she is not a serious girl. For her, each day is a gift, and she wakes up every morning with one agenda..... LIVE LIKE YOU MEAN IT!

Penelope (Piper the Swiper) is a true treasure. She is happy just to be invited, friendly almost to a fault, oh so very affectionate, and one of the true loves of my life. She breathes life into my spirit each day. Along with all of these very endearing characteristics, is a GSD. She can hear a cricket coming toward our back gate and sounds the alert to her pack. "INTRUDER!" She takes this job very seriously and does it without hesitation and without fail. I just would not bet much on her doing much more than kissing the intruder and offering them a seat on the couch and a cold soda.

As Penelope (Piper's) foster mom, I do have hopes for her. In my perfect world, she would be in a home with or without children, at least one equally playful canine friend, a large backyard to play and run in, and a family that finds all of the described behaviors as precious and magical. She is a blessing, and I long for her to be loved for just the girl that she is!

Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue

Shelter Description

GHGSDR volunteers are dedicated to saving as many German Shepherds in the Greater Houston Metro area as humanly possible - based on current resources of available foster homes, the rate at which we can find suitably matched adoptive homes, and of course, financial resources for veterinary care.

GHGSDR Shepherds mostly come from animal shelters where they are awaiting euthanasia. All of these Shepherd Dogs need loving, forever homes and families to call their own. We have several GSDs available for adoption and we regularly take in more Shepherds under our wings and into our Rescue Program, increasing the numbers of dogs available for adoption. Whenever we can, we also work with other dog rescue groups in Texas and nationwide to help ensure the safety and security of these wonderful animals.

Shelter Driving Directions

GHGSDR holds Meet and Greets @ several Petco stores in the Houston area each month, usually from 1pm to 4pm. Check our homepage for locations and dates.

On our homepage we list the names of the dogs that are expected to be at the event - check 1 or 2 days before the event.

We hope that you will come on out and meet some of our wonderful GSDs. Meet our volunteers and learn more about why GSDs are a wonderful breed!
See you there!
