NORTHFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS: Olive, rescued by AmsterDog from NYCACC's death row with only minutes to spare, is doing very well in a foster home in Western Massachusetts. Here's what her foster mom has to say: Well, it takes Olive a good couple of weeks to decompress. No surprise, she's a border collie (or border collie mix) and she was with her family for 8 years (from puppyhood) until she was surrendered to NYCACC because of a new baby. Change is hard work. 🔷 Despite her ACC notes, I would not call her fearful. She strikes me as a typical border collie (intelligent, sensitive, aware) and should never have been surrendered to a scary, chaotic facility. She is wary and watchful, not "touchy feely approachable" like a golden retriever, and you need to earn her trust. 🔷 Trust is earned by following a nice, predictable routine and providing lots of outdoor playtime and sniff-time. Olive is definitely a country girl. The smells, the grass, the quiet all seem to agree with her. 🔷 She is coming out of her shell and now approaches me, especially when she has a ball in her mouth, to get love and butt scratches. She is very, very smart and very house broken. She knows Sit, Down, Come, Give me a shake (both paws), Go Lie Down, Wait, Okay. 🔷 On recall (Come), I've been working on the secret handshake. While she likes balls and treats, a really intriguing smell can distract her from completing Come and Bring the Ball commands. Olive is aware of squirrels when in the backyard and will give chase and bark as they tease her from the top of the fence, but she can be distracted. 🔷 Boundaries are frustrating - she barks at my other dogs if they sneak to sniff under her door. She barked at the post delivery guy when he came to the fence. It all appears to be alert barking. She loved my sister who has a slow, gentle, quiet approach. She loved Joe, the transport driver, who brought her to me. 🔷 More info and pics and videos to follow as I learn more. 🔷 For potential adopters, so far, I would recommend: ✔︎ some dog experience, i.e., ability to read subtle signs (tail lift, slight whale eye) ✔︎ border collie or shepherd experience would be a plus ✔︎ large, fenced yard ✔︎ outdoor-oriented and active - Olive loves the outdoors and is good on leash ✔︎ no children unless older and dog-savvy 🔷 Olive is spayed, healthy, and up-to-date on vaccinations. She will be going to the vet for a dental cleaning. Apply at AmsterDog: http://amsterdog.org/adoptionfoster-application/
